Over 20km of the Jukskei River scoured as teams race against time in Fourways tragedy.

    Rescue teams continue their exhaustive efforts to locate a 26-year-old man who went missing on January 1 while attempting to cross a pipeline over the Jukskei River near Fourways. Flash floods swept the man away during the incident, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation that spans over 20 kilometres of the river.

    Extensive Search Operation Underway

    The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services, Johannesburg Fire and Rescue Services, and Search and Rescue South Africa (SARZA), has been tirelessly combing the river for any sign of the missing man.

    A police helicopter has also been deployed to support the search. According to NSRI, the ongoing operation is receiving unwavering dedication from all involved agencies. “Thoughts, care, and compassion are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time,” NSRI shared in a statement.

    The man was reported missing around 11 pm after being swept off a pipeline while crossing the Jukskei River during heavy rainfall. The search, activated the following day, has yet to yield any results.

    Rescue authorities continue to appeal to the public for caution during extreme weather conditions. NSRI warns against crossing submerged bridges or roadways, especially in rivers swollen by recent heavy rains across Gauteng and other regions.
