Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Leaves Families Devastated on the N3 Toll Route

N3 crash: A tragic multi-vehicle collision at Van Reenen’s Pass in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) claimed the lives of at least 18 people, including five children, on Monday evening. The accident, involving a minibus taxi, a truck, and a light motor vehicle, occurred between 8:30 PM and 9 PM on the N3 toll route connecting KZN to Gauteng.

    Details of the Accident

The horrific crash resulted in the death of 13 adults and five children, leaving the entire nation in mourning. Both the Tugela Plaza and Tugela East ramp plazas were closed to northbound traffic as emergency services worked tirelessly at the scene.

Traffic along the route was heavily backed up, with vehicles stacked between the Pyramids Motel and Van Reenen Town. Poor weather conditions, including heavy mist and rain, are believed to have contributed to the dangerous driving conditions in the area.

    Authorities React

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy:

“We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our RTI team. The increase in road accidents during heavy rainfall is a serious concern.”

The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra, echoed similar sentiments, urging drivers to delay travel and exercise extreme caution:

“Reports of poor weather, heavy mist, and dangerous conditions have been noted. We strongly recommend delaying travel to this section of the N3 Toll Route.”

    Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash remains unknown and is under investigation. Authorities are focusing on determining whether weather, road conditions, or human error played a role in the devastating incident.

Road Safety Reminder Amid Poor Weather

The incident comes amid warnings of dangerous driving conditions due to wet weather along the N3 Toll Route. Dhoogra emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, including reducing speed, maintaining safe following distances, and driving defensively.

Additional Accidents Reported on the N3

This tragedy follows an earlier crash on the same day near Colenso, where a bus carrying 57 passengers collided with a truck. At least 18 people were injured, with several requiring hospitalization. Emergency services have been stretched thin as the region continues to experience heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions.

    Travel Advisory

Drivers are urged to delay travel on the N3 Toll Route until further notice. Those who must travel are advised to remain vigilant and cautious to avoid further incidents during this busy and hazardous period.
