40 Suspects Arrested Nationwide in Connection with Road Spiking Incidents

Motorists traveling on major highways continue to face the alarming threat of road spiking incidents or rocks, which are used by criminals to disable vehicles and target unsuspecting drivers. This long-standing tactic, though not new, has escalated significantly during the festive season, creating a surge in such incidents.

The Growing Threat

Recent events underscore the severe risks posed by these crude traps, which not only immobilize vehicles but also endanger lives. Criminals strategically place spikes or rocks on roads to force drivers to stop, making them vulnerable to theft or worse. The number of reported cases has risen sharply, particularly in areas with heavy traffic or limited visibility.

While exact statistics on reported cases remain unclear, law enforcement has achieved notable progress in combating this menace. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a task team of detectives is actively working on cases involving road spiking. “So far, about 40 suspects have been arrested, and these cases are progressing to court,” Nevhuhulwi told The Citizen. These arrests represent a critical step toward curbing the spike in incidents and restoring public confidence in road safety.

Multidisciplinary Efforts to Combat Spiking

Authorities have adopted a collaborative approach, involving police units, metropolitan police departments, regional traffic authorities, and private security firms. This joint effort aims to address spiking and rock-throwing incidents more effectively. Through coordinated operations, these teams are actively patrolling known hot spots to deter criminal activity and apprehend perpetrators.

“Teams are patrolling highways, with the Flying Squad and Highway Patrol stationed at key hot spots such as the R80, N1, and N4 roads,” Nevhuhulwi added. These targeted deployments aim to increase visibility and responsiveness, ensuring that help is readily available in high-risk areas. In addition, the use of advanced surveillance tools and community tips is enhancing the effectiveness of these operations.

Staying Vigilant on the Roads

Despite these measures, motorists are urged to remain highly vigilant, especially in identified hot-spot areas. Promptly reporting any suspicious activity can be life-saving. Criminals often exploit isolated areas or moments when drivers are least alert, such as during the late-night hours. Awareness and preparedness are key to reducing vulnerability to these attacks.

Arrive Alive, a road safety organization, highlights that spiking incidents often occur on dark, isolated highways late at night. To reduce the risk of falling victim, drivers should:

  • Maintain a six-second gap from the vehicle ahead, which may help detect potential hazards.
  • Change lanes or straddle lanes when nearing bridges if other vehicles are present.
  • Drive at a moderate speed to better anticipate obstacles.

By following these precautions, drivers can enhance their ability to identify and avoid potential threats on the road.

What to Do in Case of an Incident

If a motorist encounters spikes or rocks on the road:

  • Reduce speed to about 35 km/h and carefully move the vehicle to a safe area, even if it results in additional damage.
  • Once in a secure location, exit the vehicle cautiously and find cover before calling for help.

These steps can minimize the risk of injury or further danger. In situations where motorists are confronted by criminals, staying calm and cooperative is critical. Experts from CarTrack recommend:

  • Raising both hands to demonstrate compliance.
  • Avoiding resistance, as property can be replaced, but lives cannot.
  • Observing details about the attackers to assist law enforcement later.
  • Remaining composed to avoid escalating the situation.

A Call for Awareness

As road spiking incidents continue to pose a significant threat, increased public awareness and vigilance are essential. Community involvement is crucial, as timely reporting of suspicious behavior or unusual road conditions can help prevent attacks and save lives. Public campaigns emphasizing road safety and self-defense measures are vital in empowering drivers to navigate these dangers.

While law enforcement agencies make strides in apprehending suspects, motorists play a crucial role in ensuring their safety and supporting efforts to combat this dangerous crime. By working together, authorities and the public can reduce the prevalence of road spiking and create safer travel conditions for all. The fight against road spiking requires a sustained and collective effort. As more suspects face justice, there is hope for a significant reduction in incidents. However, continued vigilance and proactive measures will remain essential to addressing this pervasive threat and safeguarding lives on the nation’s roads.
