Chinese automotive innovation continues to make inroads in South Africa, and the latest brand set to enter the market is Denza, the premium electric vehicle manufacturer owned by BYD. After months of speculation, it has now been confirmed that Denza will launch locally in 2026.
Mercedes-Benz Origins and BYD Takeover
Denza was originally created through a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz 15 years ago. Mercedes-Benz eventually reduced its stake in the company following a product realignment and exited the venture entirely in 2023. Despite its withdrawal, the German brand’s design and luxury influence remain visible in Denza’s vehicles.
South Africa’s first Denza model will be the B5, a rebadged version of the Fangchengbao Bao 5 SUV that is currently sold in China. Built on BYD’s Dual Mode Offroad (DMO) platformcthe same used for the BYD Shark bakkiec the B5 blends cutting-edge electrification with rugged SUV capabilities.
With dimensions measuring 4,890 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, 1,920 mm in height, and a 2,800 mm wheelbase, the B5 offers a commanding presence on the road. Its 220 mm of ground clearance can be increased to 310 mm with the optional Disus-P hydraulic suspension, originally developed for BYD’s high-performance YangWang division.

Powertrain and Performance
The B5 features a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors. The battery delivers 31.8 kWh of capacity, supporting DC fast charging from 30% to 80% in just 16 minutes. The vehicle produces a combined 505 kW and 760 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds. The electric-only range is estimated at 125 km, with a total driving range of up to 1,200 km when the petrol engine is factored in.

What’s Next for Denza in South Africa?
Looking beyond the B5, Denza’s future local line-up could include additional models such as the recently introduced N9 SUV, the D9 MPV, and the Z9 GT fastback estate, which will serve as the flagship in European markets. The larger, three-row Bao 8 is also a possibility for local introduction.
While more detailed launch plans are expected next year, Denza’s entry into the South African market signals growing confidence in the region’s appetite for electric and hybrid mobility solutions. As the global shift toward sustainable motoring accelerates, Denza could play a significant role in shaping the premium EV landscape in South Africa.
