Mercedes-Benz has introduced its first-ever fully electric Mercedes G-Wagen, the G580, to the South African market. Known fondly by enthusiasts as the G-Wagen, this legendary off-roader now receives a modern twist with cutting-edge EV technology, while still retaining the rugged appeal that made it iconic.

    Electrifying Performance

The new Mercedes G580 is no ordinary SUV. It comes equipped with four electric motors — one on each wheel — delivering what Mercedes calls “individual-wheel drive”. Each motor generates 108kW, giving the G580 a combined output of 432kW and a whopping 1,164Nm of torque.

This impressive power allows the G580 to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, with its top speed electronically capped at 180km/h. It draws energy from a 116kWh battery that promises a range of up to 473km on a full charge.

Charging is quick and convenient. The battery supports both 11kW AC and 200kW DC charging, the latter capable of juicing the battery from 10 to 80% in only 32 minutes — ideal for both urban commuters and adventure seekers alike.

    Built for Tough Terrain

Despite its electric soul, the G580 stays true to its off-road heritage. It boasts a reinforced ladder frame, 250mm of ground clearance, and can confidently wade through water up to 850mm deep.

Key angles are equally impressive — 32° approach, 20.3° break-over, and 30.7° departure — making it a serious contender for off-road dominance. Add in the low-range mode for enhanced torque control, and high-tech tools like G-Turn and G-Steering, which allow the car to rotate 360 degrees on the spot, and you’ve got an SUV that thrives in the wild.

    Style Meets Technology

On the outside, the G580 blends classic looks with futuristic flair. The front grille is sealed off and flanked by LED headlamps and four distinctive horizontal louvres. It rides on gloss-black 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, while the side mirrors feature G logo puddle lights.

Step inside and you’re greeted by premium luxury. The cabin mirrors the petrol-powered model with plush leather finishes, a Nappa leather steering wheel, electric seats, dual 12.3-inch digital displays, and Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system. Features like keyless start, ambient lighting, Burmester 3D sound, wireless charging, and rear entertainment screens elevate the experience further.

On the safety front, the G580 includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, lane-keep assist, emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera setup with a unique transparent bonnet view for added visibility during off-road adventures.

    Limited Edition “Edition One”

For those wanting exclusivity, Mercedes-Benz is also offering the G580 in a special “Edition One” trim. This variant comes with a selection of bespoke paint finishes, including Manufaktur South Sea Blue Magno and Classic Grey Solid.

The Edition One stands out with AMG 20-inch alloys, black detailing, silver running boards, and stylish interior touches like silver/pearl/black Nappa leather with blue stitching, carbon fibre accents, and a sporty three-spoke steering wheel.
