Learners and parents across South Africa can look forward to a well-timed break in April 2025. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that public schools will enjoy three additional school holidays, aligning with existing public holidays to create a full week off from 28 April to 2 May.
This adjustment aims to improve schedule continuity during a month packed with religious observances and public holidays.
Why the 2025 School Holidays Are Different
April 2025 presents a rare convergence of national holidays. Instead of opening schools for only one or two days between them, the DBE opted to add extra school holidays for continuity and family convenience.
“These holidays are congested in a particular week, with one coming after the other, making it impossible for schools to remain open for an extended period,” said Elijah Mhlanga, DBE spokesperson. “April is a huge religious holiday as well because of Easter, and people travel.”
April 2025: Full Week of School Holidays
The school break in question will span from Monday, 28 April to Friday, 2 May, made up of a combination of public holidays and officially declared school holidays:
- Monday, 28 April – Public holiday (in lieu of Freedom Day on 27 April)
- Tuesday, 29 April – Extra school holiday
- Wednesday, 30 April – Extra school holiday
- Thursday, 1 May – Workers’ Day (public holiday)
- Friday, 2 May – Extra school holiday
With weekends on either side, learners will effectively get nine consecutive days off from school.
Will the Extra Holidays Affect the Academic Year?
No. The DBE has assured parents and educators that the official school calendar still complies with the requirement of 200 instructional days for the year.
To accommodate the longer April break, the 2025 school year began earlier than usual, starting on 15 January and ending on 10 December. The structure ensures that learners still receive the necessary teaching time while allowing for rest during a heavily disrupted week.
The full calendar is available, which reflects the national academic framework.
Mixed Reactions from Parents and Educators
The announcement has received a mixed response from parents and teachers. While many welcome the opportunity for family time or short holidays, others are concerned about working arrangements and academic continuity.
“It’s helpful to have advance notice. At least we can plan holiday care or arrange time off work. It’s just important that our kids don’t fall behind on learning,” said a Gauteng parent.
School governing bodies are encouraged to communicate any scheduling changes early to ensure smooth transitions around the holiday period.
What Learners Should Do During the Break
While many learners will treat the week as a time to relax, the DBE and schools recommend that pupils also use the opportunity to revise and prepare for the second term.
Informal learning — including reading, educational outings, or online revision — can help keep minds sharp without adding pressure during the holiday.
The decision to introduce extra school holidays in April 2025 reflects a proactive approach to managing South Africa’s unique school calendar. The move ensures both consistency in education and convenience for families during a traditionally busy period.
