Rand Water Maintenance Leaves Parts of Johannesburg Facing Prolonged Water Outages
Johannesburg is grappling with a worsening water crisis as several areas, including Sandton, Midrand, and Fourways, continue to experience dry taps following maintenance on the Palmiet Reservoir by Rand Water.
Rand Water recently completed its 48-hour maintenance project aimed at improving infrastructure efficiency. Despite this, parts of the city remain without water due to unexpected challenges. According to Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo, three leaks were identified during the project.
“The first two leaks, we managed to fix them on time,” Maroo explained. “The third leak, we realized, would take too much time to repair, so we implemented a temporary measure to ensure people could start receiving water again.”

The delays have caused frustration among residents who had anticipated water restoration by Monday morning. Many households and businesses are struggling to cope, as Johannesburg’s water scarcity issues persist.
The impacted areas, particularly in Sandton, Midrand, and Fourways, are urging authorities to provide regular updates and a more robust contingency plan to mitigate prolonged outages.
