UJ Takes Action Against Social Media Claims of Academic Bias
UJ Denies Claims by Fake Lecturer Accused of Manipulating Student Results
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has launched an investigation following explosive social media claims that a lecturer was deliberately failing South African students while ensuring Zimbabwean students passed with distinctions.
A social media user, identified as Joel Sangweni, made waves on X and Facebook, alleging that he manipulates student results at UJ. Screenshots of a Facebook post attributed to Sangweni read:
“We don’t make money here. Mina, I’m a lecturer. I will make your kids suffer and fail, those from Zimbabwe will pass [with] distinctions.”
The post caused national outrage, with concerned parents, students, and education stakeholders demanding urgent intervention from the university.
UJ Distances Itself from Sangweni’s Claims
Responding to the backlash, UJ issued a statement denying any association with Sangweni and clarifying that he is not employed by the university. The institution confirmed that he had only briefly served as a tutor in 2024 and is not a lecturer.
The university stated:
“Mr. Sangweni is not employed by the university in any capacity. He briefly served as a tutor in 2024.”
Legal Action Considered Against Fake Lecturer
Sangweni has since claimed that his social media accounts were hacked, but UJ has initiated an investigation into the matter to verify the authenticity of the posts. The university also warned that it is considering legal action against those spreading misinformation and tarnishing its reputation.
“The university takes academic integrity seriously and will take strong steps, including legal action, against any person who undermines its commitment to academic integrity,” UJ said.
Social Media Users React
The controversy has fueled strong reactions online. One Facebook user, Sandy MaFaku Galada, expressed outrage:
“As a mother of a university student, I am so hurt and offended by this statement. Imagine having someone like this who is proud to say such things.”
Many South Africans have called for stricter measures to protect the integrity of the country’s higher education system and ensure that no student is unfairly disadvantaged.
UJ’s Commitment to Academic Excellence
UJ reassured the public that it remains committed to fair and transparent education and does not tolerate misconduct that could compromise the institution’s values. The university encourages students and the public to report any verified instances of academic dishonesty.
As the investigation unfolds, UJ has urged the public to rely on official university statements and avoid spreading unverified claims.
