KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been struck by yet another devastating flood, further compounding the hardships of communities already struggling to recover from last week’s torrential downpours. The latest heavy rains over the weekend caused significant damage to property and infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents displaced. As emergency response teams work tirelessly to provide aid, the situation remains dire for many affected families.
KZN Floods Wreak Havoc on Infrastructure and Livelihoods
The weekend’s heavy rainfall left many areas of KZN, including eThekwini, submerged, bringing traffic to a standstill and forcing businesses to shut down. In some areas, the flooding was so severe that even grave sites were affected. Near Wentworth Hospital, stormwater overflow caused erosion, damaging tombstones and burial sites.
Motorists faced major disruptions, with key roads such as Tara Road, Blundell Road Bridge, Isipingo Beach, and parts of Mangosuthu Highway becoming impassable due to flooding. The widespread impact of the KZN flood has raised concerns over the province’s disaster preparedness, especially as heavy rains have become more frequent due to climate change.
Families in Mourning as Search Efforts Continue
While no new fatalities have been officially reported following the weekend floods, many families remain in distress as search operations continue for missing individuals.
The Ndlela family from Chatsworth is among those hoping for closure. Their loved ones, Ncami and Mbali, aged 23 and 36, were swept away in last week’s floods and have yet to be found. The family remains hopeful, clinging to the possibility of laying their sisters to rest with dignity.
“We just want to find the bodies of our loved ones and bury them. The pain of waiting has been unbearable,” said Musa Ndlela, expressing the grief that many other affected families share.
Government and NGOs Join Forces in Relief Efforts
In response to the escalating crisis, both government and non-profit organisations have mobilized resources to assist affected communities. The eThekwini Municipality Disaster Management and Emergency Services remain on high alert, coordinating with aid groups such as the Al-Imdaad Foundation, the Red Cross, Gift of the Givers, UIPCO, and Toyota South Africa to distribute food and shelter to displaced residents.
According to municipal reports, last week’s floods resulted in:
- 3,676 families being relocated
- 2,224 housing units being demolished
- 7,916 families still awaiting relocation from 42 transit camps
With thousands left homeless, authorities are working on housing solutions for those affected, prioritizing smaller transit camps for inclusion in upcoming housing programs.
South African Weather Services Issues Emergency Warnings
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had initially issued a Level 2 warning for the province but quickly escalated it to Level 5 as heavy rains intensified. The warning specifically highlighted the risk of further flooding in the southeastern parts of KZN, areas already vulnerable due to previous storms.
Fortunately, SAWS has forecasted no further rain for today, allowing recovery efforts to progress without additional weather-related disruptions. However, the municipality has urged residents and motorists to remain vigilant, as waterlogged roads and unstable structures still pose safety risks.

As KZN grapples with yet another flood disaster, residents and experts are calling for improved infrastructure and emergency response measures to mitigate future flood damage.
