Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Threaten Communities in KwaZulu-Natal
KZN disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are on high alert following an Orange Level 5 warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The severe weather, which includes heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, is expected to persist until Tuesday, posing a serious risk of flooding, infrastructure damage, and road closures.
Residents Urged to Seek Higher Ground
Following recent floods that claimed 11 lives and caused widespread devastation in eThekwini Municipality, authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to higher ground. KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has advised people to avoid non-essential travel and remain indoors where possible.
“We are deeply concerned about the potential impact of these severe thunderstorms and the associated flooding. The province has already experienced tragic losses of life due to recent inclement weather conditions,” Buthelezi stated.
Severe Weather Advisory for Motorists
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling in KZN during this period. RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane emphasized the importance of checking weather forecasts before driving and avoiding nighttime travel.
“Your safety remains our priority. One life lost on the road is one too many,” said Zwane.
Humanitarian Aid and Relief Efforts Underway
The eThekwini Municipality has activated various government departments, including Human Settlements, Health, and Social Development, to assist affected residents. NGOs like Al-Imdaad Foundation, Red Cross, and Gift of the Givers are also providing humanitarian aid, including food and shelter for flood victims.
“Assessments are ongoing to determine the extent of infrastructure damage and the budget required for repairs,” said eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana.
Authorities are also intensifying awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal to prevent blocked stormwater drainage systems, which contribute to severe flooding.
