The Gauteng education sector has been rocked by disturbing allegations after a Soweto teacher under investigation from Lufhereng Secondary School was accused of the rape of a Grade 11 pupil. The 45-year-old educator is currently under police investigation following claims that the incident took place last Thursday at his residence.
Teacher Removed Amid Investigation
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that the Soweto teacher under investigation has been precautionarily removed from the school. MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the department’s commitment to the safety and well-being of learners.
“This measure is taken to prioritise the safety and well-being of the affected pupil and the broader school community. The department will also ensure that all due processes are followed to address this matter appropriately,” Chiloane said.
In addition, a police case has been opened, and law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
Support for the Victim
Recognizing the emotional and psychological toll of such incidents, the department has deployed its psycho-social support unit to provide trauma counselling to the affected pupil. According to Chiloane, special academic support will also be arranged to ensure that the pupil’s education is not further disrupted.
“We are profoundly devastated by this serious allegation. Educators are supposed to be custodians of youth development and education, not perpetrators of actions that traumatize the young minds they are entrusted to teach,” Chiloane added.
Gauteng Education MEC Condemns Rape in Schools
MEC Chiloane strongly condemned the incident involving the Soweto teacher under investigation, stating that such cases have no place in the school environment or society at large.
“As the department, we vehemently condemn such actions in our schools and society at large. We call upon law enforcement agencies to handle this case with the sensitivity it deserves. We remain committed to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all pupils. Any form of alleged misconduct by educators will not be tolerated,” Chiloane affirmed.
Tragic History of Sexual Violence in Schools
This case comes in the wake of other devastating incidents involving schoolchildren in Gauteng. Last year, a Grade 7 pupil from Echibini Junior Secondary School in Soshanguve was raped and strangled in her own home. The alleged perpetrator reportedly broke into her house through a window while her parents were asleep in another room.
The education department has since reiterated the urgent need for stronger protection measures for pupils and stricter enforcement of laws against educators who violate ethical and legal standards.
Call for Justice and Protection of Learners
The Soweto teacher under investigation underscores the need for stronger safeguards in schools. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information related to such crimes to report them immediately. The case is currently under police investigation, and updates are expected in the coming weeks.
For learners affected by trauma or abuse, support services are available through the Gauteng Department of Education’s psycho-social support unit.
