Latest Arrest Deepens Investigation Into 10 Million Child Pornography Files

South African police have intensified their crackdown on child pornography networks with the arrest of a 25-year-old woman in Houghton. The woman, a professional web designer, is believed to be the girlfriend of a Midrand man who was previously apprehended after authorities uncovered approximately 10 million child pornography images and videos in his possession.

    Details of the Arrest

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk confirmed that the woman was arrested on Thursday, 23 January 2025, during a follow-up operation by the Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Units. She faces charges of possession of child pornography and money laundering.

“This arrest follows the takedown of her 35-year-old boyfriend, who was apprehended last week during a joint operation conducted by the national and Gauteng SECI Units,” Van Wyk stated.

The arrest comes after investigators linked the woman to the incriminating materials seized during the raid on her boyfriend’s apartment on 17 January 2025. Evidence includes an estimated 10 million files found on various electronic devices and cash amounting to R560,000, suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.

    Court Proceedings

The woman is set to appear before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 January 2025. Her boyfriend has already appeared in the same court earlier this week, with his case postponed as investigations continue.

Prosecutors have expressed concerns over potential additional evidence still being uncovered. They have urged the court to delay bail hearings until the investigation is further advanced.

    Broader Investigation

This arrest highlights the ongoing work of South African authorities in collaboration with international partners like the FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security. Police statistics reveal that at least 21 suspects have been arrested for child pornography-related crimes in South Africa over the past two years.

Notable cases include the December 2024 arrests of a former school principal in Pretoria and a 49-year-old man in Vanderbijlpark. These arrests underscore the seriousness of child exploitation crimes in the country and the commitment of law enforcement to bringing perpetrators to justice.
