Revamped Nissan Magnite Targets Competitors as Key Model for the Brand’s Revival

With the discontinuation of the NP200 earlier this year, Nissan’s product lineup in South Africa has undergone a significant shift. The Magnite now stands out as the automaker’s most important volume-selling model. As Nissan seeks to reclaim its footing in the competitive market, the refreshed Magnite is a critical component of the brand’s strategy.

A Vital Model in the Lineup

The Magnite’s role has become even more pivotal due to the declining sales of the Navara and the absence of the NP200. Although two new SUVs based on the Renault Duster and Dacia Bigster are expected to join the lineup in the coming months, the Magnite remains the centerpiece of Nissan’s offerings. Since its introduction to the South African market three years ago, the Magnite has sold over 21,000 units, showcasing its appeal in the compact SUV segment.

However, competition in this segment is fierce. Rivals from other global automakers, particularly those from China and India, are increasingly offering similar features at competitive prices. Originally designed as Datsun’s flagship model before the brand was discontinued, the Magnite has successfully transitioned to the Nissan nameplate and is now marketed globally, with exports reaching 65 countries.

Fresh Styling and Enhanced Features

The recent facelift brings the Magnite in line with contemporary design trends while enhancing its overall appeal. The new styling draws inspiration from Nissan’s Kicks, sold in the U.S., and includes the following updates:

  • A honeycomb grille with chrome and gloss black accents.
  • Redesigned headlights with “lightsaber” LED indicators.
  • Blacked-out rear light clusters and a revised bumper.
  • Diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels on mid-range and top-spec models.

The facelift also introduces Sunrise Copper Orange as a new exterior color, alongside existing shades such as Storm White, Onyx Black, and Vivid Red. Dual-tone combinations are available, with contrasting black roofs adding a modern touch.

Inside, the Magnite offers more refined materials and upgraded features:

  • An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • A revised 7-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • Leatherette seat upholstery with a heat-resistant coating for the Acenta Plus trim.

Subtle changes, such as a frameless rear-view mirror and improved seat comfort, further enhance the interior’s practicality and style.

Driving Dynamics

The Magnite retains its pair of 1.0-liter three-cylinder engines, offering both naturally aspirated and turbocharged options. The manual transmission, paired with the turbo engine, provides an engaging and responsive drive. Meanwhile, the CVT option delivers smoother city performance, though it lacks the liveliness of the manual.

The Magnite’s suspension, featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent coil design at the rear, ensures a comfortable ride. Its light steering enhances maneuverability, making it suitable for urban environments.

A Competitive Package

While the refreshed Magnite impresses with its design and features, its pricing has entered a more competitive zone. The range now peaks at R410,700 for the Acenta Plus CVT trim, positioning it against larger rivals like the Hyundai Venue and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Despite this, the Magnite remains a strong contender in the compact SUV market, offering excellent value for its features and performance.

Pricing (includes a six-year/150,000 km warranty and three-year/30,000 km service plan):

  • Magnite 1.0 Visia – R246,200
  • Magnite 1.0 Visia EZ Shift – R263,200
