- Final Score: Orlando Pirates 1 – 1 Moroka Swallows
Shaky start from Orlando Pirates
The Buccaneers were looking to get back to winning ways after suffering defeat to Sekhukhune United. But some careless mistakes were being made in their defensive end from having to clear the ball out of the goal box, instead giving Moroka Swallows opportunities to attack into the goal area.
Pirates Coach Jose Riveiro opted to start Xoki, Maswangayi, and Sibisi in the lineup to add some firepower. Within a minute of the start of the game, Swallows almost drew first blood after a poor clearance from Sipho Chaine almost caused a goal when Swallows struck the crossbar instead.
Swallows hold firm in the first half
Moroka Swallows had a blistering start to the game, and almost had an opportunity to score after the Pirates clearance error in their defensive end. However, Swallows has been consistent in creating more scoring opportunities. They eventually found their chance in the 26th minute when another poor clearance by Chaine was intercepted by Lindokuhle Mtshali and punished the Pirates with a shot to the back of the net.
Both teams kept creating more chances within the first half, as Koapeng of Moroka failed to convert to goal to a two-goal lead, while the Bucs failed to equalise after a missed goal opportunity from Mabasa. The halftime score remained 1-0 with Moroka Swallows in the lead, reflecting the tight nature of the first half.
Second Half Brings More Drama
Orlando Pirates came into the second half with a renewed sense of urgency, looking to break the defensive structure of the Moroka Swallows. Swallows surprised many with their defensive organisation and tactical approach, but Pirates kept the persistence of attempting to score on target, initiated by the Bucs’ Timm.
The aggressive approach, however, paid off just a few minutes into the second half when a cross pass from Lebitso found Maswangayi in the box and converted to goal in the 53rd minute to equalise. This boosted Pirates’ confidence in creating more attacking opportunities. Pirates would have found themselves in the lead when another great cross into the goal box converted to goal, but was disallowed after an offside call by the official.
Late Drama and a Share of the Spoils
The closing stages were tense, with both teams throwing players forward in search of a winner. Orlando Pirates were reduced to ten men however, after Sibisi reportedly hurled abusive language towards the referee and therefore given a red card. The final whistle blew with the score locked at 1-1, leaving both sides with mixed emotions.
