WhatsApp To Stop Working on Over 35 Older Smartphones
SHARE

As technology evolves, so do the requirements for the apps we rely on daily. WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging apps, has announced that it will stop supporting over 35 older smartphones. This move is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to ensure security and enhance user experience by focusing on newer operating systems. Here’s what you need to know about this significant update.

Why Is WhatsApp Dropping Support for Older Smartphones?

WhatsApp periodically updates its list of supported devices to streamline its services and incorporate the latest security features. Older smartphones models often run on outdated operating systems, which can pose security risks and lack the capability to support new features. By discontinuing support for these devices, WhatsApp can focus on optimising the app for newer, more secure platforms.

Which Smartphones Are Affected?

The list of smartphones that will no longer support WhatsApp includes models running on older versions of Android and iOS. Specifically, devices running on Android versions below 4.0.3 and iPhones with iOS 9 or earlier will be affected. Here is a list of the older smartphones:

Android Devices

  1. Samsung Galaxy S2
  2. HTC Desire
  3. LG Optimus Black
  4. Motorola Droid Razr
  5. Sony Xperia Arc
  6. Google Nexus S
  7. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  8. Huawei Ascend G300
  9. Lenovo A660
  10. ZTE Grand X
  11. Acer Liquid Z110
  12. HTC Wildfire S
  13. Motorola Defy+
  14. Sony Xperia Neo
  15. Samsung Galaxy Ace 2
  16. LG Spectrum
  17. Huawei Activa 4G
  18. ZTE Score
  19. Pantech Breakout
  20. T-Mobile MyTouch 4G

iOS Devices

  1. iPhone 4
  2. iPhone 3GS
  3. iPhone 3G
  4. iPhone 2G

Windows Phone Devices

  1. Nokia Lumia 520
  2. Nokia Lumia 525
  3. Nokia Lumia 530
  4. HTC Windows Phone 8S
  5. Samsung Ativ S
  6. Nokia Lumia 620

Other Devices

  1. BlackBerry Curve 9220
  2. BlackBerry Curve 9320
  3. BlackBerry Bold 9900
  4. BlackBerry Torch 9810
  5. Nokia Asha 201
  6. Nokia Asha 210
  7. Nokia Asha 300
  8. Nokia Asha 302

What Should Users Do?

If you own one of the affected smartphones, you will need to upgrade to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp. Here are some steps to take:

  1. Check Your OS Version: Go to your phone’s settings to check the current operating system version. If it’s below Android 4.0.3 or iOS 9, your device is on the list.
  2. Back Up Your Chats: Ensure you back up your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive or iCloud. This way, you won’t lose your important messages when you switch to a new device.
  3. Upgrade Your Device: Consider upgrading to a newer smartphone model that supports the latest versions of Android or iOS. This not only ensures continued WhatsApp support but also gives you access to the latest features and security updates.

Benefits of Upgrading

While upgrading to a new device might seem inconvenient, there are several benefits:

  • Enhanced Security: Newer devices receive regular security updates, protecting you from vulnerabilities.
  • Better Performance: Modern smartphones offer improved performance, faster processing, and better battery life.
  • New Features: Upgrading gives you access to the latest features and innovations in smartphone technology, including enhanced camera capabilities, more storage, and advanced connectivity options.

WhatsApp’s decision to stop supporting over 35 older smartphones is a step towards enhancing user experience and ensuring security. While it may require some users to upgrade their devices, the benefits of using a newer, more secure smartphone are worth the investment. Stay connected and enjoy a seamless messaging experience by ensuring your device is up to date.
