Overview: University of Johannesburg Student Challenges

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) faces a multifaceted challenge as its students struggle with mental health issues, financial burdens, safety concerns, and other obstacles in pursuit of their education. Recent presentations by UJ to the Portfolio Committee of Higher Education revealed the depth of these challenges, painting a concerning picture of student life on and off campus.

Mental Health Crisis Among UJ Students

One of the most significant issues at UJ is the mental health crisis affecting its students. With the rising cases of anxiety, depression, and even suicide, the university acknowledges the strain that academic pressures, financial instability, and social isolation have placed on students. Although UJ offers counseling services, these resources are reportedly under-resourced, leading to limited support for students in need. Herman Esterhuizen, UJ’s media liaison manager, stated that suicide rates have increased among students this academic year, though he withheld precise figures to respect confidentiality.

In response, UJ has taken steps to strengthen mental health support by forming partnerships with external organizations, expanding digital counseling resources, and optimizing triage systems to ensure that students receive timely assistance. However, the demand for mental health services has far outpaced supply, indicating that additional resources and initiatives may be necessary to support the growing number of students facing these challenges.

Financial Struggles Intensify

Financial challenges are another pressing issue at UJ, exacerbated by the increase in registration fees from R3,870 in 2023 to R5,560, with fees for residence students jumping from R6,470 to R9,270. This financial burden affects not only the students but also their families, who often struggle to cover tuition, housing, and living expenses. Many students rely on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to cover these costs, but delayed funding, processing appeals, and concerns over possible defunding add additional stress.

In response to student hunger, UJ has implemented meal assistance programs, helping over 6,000 students who might otherwise struggle to afford daily meals. Financial instability impacts not only students’ mental health but also their academic performance, as some are forced to balance part-time jobs with their studies, further straining their time and resources.

Safety Concerns On and Off Campus

Safety is a significant concern for UJ students, especially as incidents of theft, kidnapping, and violence near campus have made headlines. While campus security is generally rated positively by students, the areas surrounding UJ, particularly on commutes to and from campus, are often risky. Safety concerns escalate for students attending evening classes, as security patrols are limited in some areas.

To address these risks, UJ has extended security patrols around campus perimeters, increased security personnel during peak hours, and installed 24/7 surveillance cameras. The university has also strengthened ties with local law enforcement and partnered with community initiatives like Jozi My Jozi to enhance off-campus safety.

Housing and Living Conditions

Overcrowded or poorly maintained housing remains an ongoing issue at UJ. With limited capacity in university-owned residences, many students, especially first-years and international students, face long waiting lists or have to settle for off-campus housing that may not meet basic standards. UJ regularly inspects these off-campus accommodations before accrediting them and conducts follow-ups to ensure safe and clean conditions. Future projects aim to increase on-campus accommodation capacity, which could help alleviate some of the pressure on students seeking safe, affordable housing.

Limited Academic Resources and Technological Barriers

While students are generally satisfied with the quality of teaching at UJ, large class sizes and limited access to academic resources present challenges. Students often struggle to engage fully in their studies, and access to lecturers outside of class hours can be limited. For students from disadvantaged backgrounds, technological barriers only add to these challenges. To address this, UJ has introduced laptop loan programs and increased access to computer labs, allowing more students to complete assignments and research projects efficiently.

The ongoing water crisis in Johannesburg has also added to students’ difficulties. UJ has installed water tanks across campuses and deployed water tankers to ensure continuous access during shortages. On the Soweto campus, cable theft and related power outages further disrupt students’ lives and studies, demonstrating the broader infrastructural issues that also impact education in the region.

Social Life and Campus Involvement

Although UJ hosts a vibrant social scene, with numerous clubs and societies, some students feel that there is a lack of diversity in campus events and leadership roles. Students from underrepresented backgrounds often find it challenging to engage in leadership, which could provide more inclusive representation in campus life.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has voiced its concern about the need for events and activities that cater to a broader array of student interests and identities. UJ has acknowledged these concerns and is working with the SRC to ensure that student voices are heard and to promote a more inclusive social environment.

Conclusion

The challenges facing students at the University of Johannesburg are complex and interconnected, with mental health, financial instability, safety concerns, housing, academic limitations, and social inclusivity all contributing to the overall student experience. UJ’s efforts to address these issues, such as enhancing mental health resources, expanding financial support, and strengthening safety measures, are crucial steps toward creating a more supportive environment for its students.

However, continued investment and a comprehensive approach to address these challenges are essential. With additional support and a focus on inclusivity, UJ can provide its students with the resources and opportunities they need to overcome these obstacles and succeed academically and personally.
