Eastern Cape Head-On Collision Claims 14 Lives as Investigations Continue
A devastating head-on collision in the Eastern Cape has claimed 14 lives, including six family members. The crash, which occurred on the N9 highway outside Graaff-Reinet on Monday morning, involved an SUV and a minibus taxi. This tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred when a Hyundai Creta, with six occupants, collided head-on with a minibus taxi carrying multiple passengers. The SUV was travelling from Middelburg to Graaff-Reinet, while the minibus was headed in the opposite direction. Tragically, all six occupants of the SUV, believed to be family members, died at the scene, alongside seven from the minibus taxi. The 14th victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed that 11 other passengers from the minibus taxi were transported to the local hospital with injuries. The department has stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Transport Department’s Response
Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, expressed shock at the severity of the crash and confirmed that authorities are investigating the cause. Xolile Nqatha, MEC for Transport and Community in the Eastern Cape, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.
Ongoing Investigations and Road Safety Concerns
As investigations into the tragic incident continue, officials have raised concerns over road safety in the province. The Eastern Cape has experienced several head-on collisions in recent months. A previous crash in early December also claimed three lives and left others with serious injuries. The department has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly as traffic volumes are expected to increase in the coming weeks.
