Instead of being taken to an accredited repair facility as promised, the vehicle is transported to a private storage location, where steep hourly fees are imposed for “safekeeping.”

Victims only realize the deception once they attempt to recover their vehicles, facing exorbitant release fees before their cars can be transferred to legitimate workshops.

A Growing Concern in Gauteng

A recent incident in Gauteng underscores the severity of this issue. A mother warned her community after her daughter was targeted following a three-car collision.

“Within minutes of the accident, tow truck operators arrived, questioning whether her daughter had insurance. One of them handed her a phone, claiming that her insurer was on the line,” Hanekom explained.

The person on the other end of the call falsely warned that her vehicle’s airbag could unexpectedly deploy if she attempted to drive, creating a potential safety hazard. Additionally, she was told that her insurance would not cover any damages if she continued using the car in its current condition.

Believing she was speaking with a legitimate representative from her insurer, the daughter consented to having her vehicle towed for an assessment. Later, she discovered that the car had not been taken to an accredited repair center but was instead being held at a tow truck company’s premises. To release the vehicle, the company demanded an outrageous R12,900 fee.

Legal Challenges in Recovering Vehicles

Seeking assistance, the family approached the South African Police Service. While officers were willing to accompany them to retrieve the car, they informed the victim that because she had unknowingly signed a digital authorization form, their ability to intervene was limited. This document had effectively granted the tow truck company legal permission to tow and store the car while charging accumulating fees.
