Renault Gears Up for 2025 Duster Launch

After a relatively quiet 2024, Renault South Africa is preparing for an exciting 2025. The company, which has kept a low profile throughout much of the year, has officially outlined its product plans at a recent media conference held in the Magaliesberg. Highlighting its upcoming launches, Renault confirmed that the much-anticipated all-new Duster will be one of its flagship offerings, set to debut in March 2025. Along with the new Renault Duster, several other key models will be introduced, marking a significant shift in the brand’s strategy to reclaim its position in the South African market.

Renault Duster Reasons for the Quiet 2024

Renault’s low profile throughout 2024 can be attributed to the challenges caused by exchange rate fluctuations. Zian van Heerden, the Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, explained that the value of the Rand against the Euro posed difficulties for the company. As an importer, Renault’s pricing is impacted by the Euro, and during the latter part of 2023, the exchange rate was hovering just below R20 to the Euro. This made it hard to introduce new models, such as the Duster-based Oroch, which had to be delayed due to its high potential cost.

Optimism for 2025

Looking ahead, Renault is optimistic about the local market. Economists have projected a more favorable exchange rate of around R18.05 to the Euro by the end of next year, which should ease some of the financial strain on vehicle imports. Renault is also aiming to strengthen its position in the market, with plans to expand its model lineup in order to reclaim a spot in the top five best-selling brands in South Africa.

The Duster: A Key Player in 2025

The major product launch for Renault in 2025 is the highly anticipated new Duster, which will now feature hybrid technology. Originally planned for release in late 2024, the launch of the Duster has been pushed to March 2025. The vehicle will be Renault’s first hybrid model to be introduced in South Africa and will be powered by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system paired with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 96 kW. The Duster will be available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, with the latter offering a six-speed manual gearbox.

In addition to its hybrid powertrain, the new Duster will feature an updated interior, marking a significant shift in design and technology compared to the outgoing model.

Other Renault Launches for 2025

Renault’s plans for 2025 go beyond the Duster.

  • Q2 2025: The refreshed Clio will make its debut, featuring updated styling while retaining its 1.0-litre turbocharged engine.
  • Q4 2025: Renault will also launch the facelifted Captur and the much-awaited Arkana coupe-styled hybrid. Additionally, the Trafic van will see the introduction of a passenger variant, while updated versions of the Kiger and Triber will also be rolled out.

Looking Ahead: The Bigster and Beyond

Renault is also setting its sights on the future with plans to introduce the Bigster SUV around 2026 or 2027. This larger SUV will feature a seven-seat configuration, setting it apart from the five-seat Duster, and is expected to offer a more premium option for South African buyers.

However, some models, including the electric Renault 4 and 5, will not be introduced in South Africa due to the challenges posed by the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure and the high price points of these models.

Conclusion

With an ambitious strategy for 2025, Renault South Africa is poised to regain its momentum in the local market. The launch of the hybrid Duster marks a significant step towards sustainability, while the broader product lineup promises to meet a wide range of consumer needs. For South African car buyers, Renault’s upcoming models offer exciting prospects in the near future.
