The South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) is a professional football league in South Africa. It is the highest level of football in the country and is contested by 16 clubs. The league is popular and attracts a lot of attention from fans and sponsors. As a result, the players in the PSL are well-paid.

The average PSL player makes between R7,500 and R15,000 per month. However, experienced players can make much more, with some earning up to R100,000 per month. The PSL highest paid player is Keagan Dolly, who makes a reported R1.1 million per month.

There are a number of factors that affect how much a player is paid in the PSL. These include:

  • Performance: Players who perform well are likely to command higher salaries.
  • Experience: Experienced players are generally paid more than younger players.
  • Marketability: Players who are popular with fans and sponsors are likely to be paid more.
  • Club finances: Wealthier clubs can afford to pay their players more.

The PSL highest paid players typically play for the biggest clubs in the league, such as Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates. These clubs have the financial resources to pay their players high salaries.

Here are some of the PSL highest paid players in 2024:

Keagan Dolly (R1.1 Million per month)

  • Star midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs
  • Known for his creative playmaking, goal-scoring threat, and leadership on the field.
  • Continues to be one of the most influential players in the league.

Khama Billiat (R800 000 per month)

  • Another Kaizer Chiefs star, Billiat’s experience and technical ability make him a dangerous attacking threat.
  • Despite his age, he continues to score vital goals for his club.

Bongani Zungu (R750 000 per month)

  • A powerful midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns, Zungu’s international career and strong performances justify his high salary.
  • Made headlines upon his return to South Africa, bolstering Sundowns’ midfield.

Andile Jali (R550 000 – R600 000 per month)

  • Jali’s move to Moroka Swallows FC brought his international experience to the team.
  • Commands a considerable salary as a skilled central midfielder.

Ricardo Nascimento (R500 000 per month)

  • Brazilian defender who recently joined Royal AM.
  • One of the most experienced and decorated defenders in the PSL.

Deon Hotto (R500 000+ per month)

  • Namibian international who brings speed and skill to Orlando Pirates FC.
  • One of the highest-earning players at his club.

Marcelo Allende (Undisclosed but substantial salary)

  • Chilean midfielder and a recent, costly acquisition for Mamelodi Sundowns.
  • Brings international flair and attacking prowess to the league.

Itumeleng Khune (R430 000 per month)

  • South Africa’s highly regarded goalkeeper, playing for Kaizer Chiefs.
  • One of the most beloved and recognizable players in the league.

Nasir Abubaker (Undisclosed but substantial salary)

  • Nicknamed the “South African Neymar” due to his exciting playing style.
  • New international signing for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Thapelo Morena (R450 000+ per month)

  • Loyal, long-serving Mamelodi Sundowns player.
  • Commands a solid salary as a skilled and versatile player.

Gaston Sirino (R400 000 per month)

  • Uruguayan midfielder known for his creativity and work rate on Mamelodi Sundowns.

Thulani Hlatshwayo (R300 000+ per month)

  • Former Orlando Pirates captain who moved to Supersport United.
  • Brings veteran experience and leadership to his new club.

These players are all talented and have performed well at the highest level which makes them more deserving of their high salaries.

It is important to note that the gap between the PSL highest paid players and the average South African citizen is significant. However, the players in the PSL bring a lot of joy to millions of fans and generate a lot of revenue for the league and its sponsors.
