Overview: How to Prepare for Your Future While Waiting For Matric Results

The matric exams are behind you, and the festive season is in full swing. However, for the class of 2024, waiting for matric results is a crucial time to start preparing for the next chapter of your life. With the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results set to be released on 16 January 2025, making smart decisions during this waiting period can set the foundation for a successful future.

1. Avoid Common Mistakes

Many matriculants fall into the trap of idleness during December, assuming the hard work is over. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), a common mistake is neglecting application deadlines for funding or post-school opportunities. Another error is not having a backup plan if your first-choice career path doesn’t pan out.

Instead of relaxing too much, use this time to take actionable steps toward your future.

2. Explore Career Options

The Director of Career Development Services in DHET, Xola Mpengesi, recommends using this period to explore your potential career path. Some activities to consider include:

  • Volunteering: Engage in community projects to gain hands-on experience and contribute to society.
  • Shadowing Professionals: Spend time with individuals working in your desired field to understand day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Online Research: Platforms like the National Career Advice Portal (NCAP) offer valuable insights into various careers, complete with videos and detailed descriptions.

These activities help clarify your career path and provide a competitive edge when applying for tertiary education or jobs.

3. Update Your CV and Skillset

A well-prepared CV is essential for internships, part-time jobs, or bursary applications. In addition to updating your CV, focus on developing soft skills that employers value, such as:

  • Time Management
  • Communication Skills
  • Problem-Solving Abilities

Consider enrolling in online courses or certifications in areas of interest. Websites like Coursera, Udemy, or local community platforms often offer free or affordable learning opportunities.

4. Apply for Funding and Opportunities

Don’t miss out on financial aid or bursary opportunities. Ensure all applications are submitted before the deadlines. Resources like NSFAS, international scholarships managed by the DHET, and community-based bursary programs are excellent starting points.

Additionally, explore platforms like SAYouth.mobi for job postings and other opportunities to kickstart your career.

5. Prepare for Results Day

With the NSC results being released on 16 January 2025, it’s essential to be prepared:

  • Collect your statement of results from your school or exam center.
  • Verify that your details, such as name and ID number, are correctly reflected on the statement. Report any discrepancies to the Department of Basic Education (DBE) by 21 February 2025.
  • In case of result queries, submit them within 30 days of the release.

Remember, your results will also be available online from 6 AM on the day of release.

6. Explore Alternative Pathways

If traditional tertiary education isn’t your preferred route, consider alternative options:

  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges: These institutions offer practical courses tailored to specific industries.
  • Learnerships and Internships: Many companies provide structured programs that combine work experience with learning.
  • Entrepreneurship: If you have a business idea, now might be the time to explore it. Look for resources to help you get started, such as local entrepreneurship hubs or online guides.

7. Balance Rest and Productivity

While it’s important to stay productive, don’t forget to recharge. The stress of final exams can take a toll, and this downtime can help you recover mentally and physically.

Here’s how to strike a balance:

  • Set a Daily Schedule: Allocate time for productive tasks, but also include leisure activities.
  • Engage in Physical Activities: Exercise can boost your mood and energy levels.
  • Connect with Loved Ones: Spend time with family and friends to nurture your support network.

8. Build Your Network

Attend career expos, webinars, or community events to meet professionals and peers who share your interests. Networking can open doors to mentorships, job opportunities, and valuable advice for your career path ahead.

The period between your final exams and the release of matric results is more than just a waiting game—it’s an opportunity to set the stage for your future. By avoiding common pitfalls, exploring career options, and staying proactive, you can turn this transitional phase into a productive and fulfilling time.

Start now, and you’ll be ready to take on 2025 with confidence and purpose!
