As the festive season approaches, motorists are being urged to exercise heightened caution, particularly along the N4 highway, due to an increase in tyre spiking incidents. Criminals are employing new tactics to target unsuspecting drivers, typically at night. These dangerous practices involve scattering sharp objects on the road to puncture tyres, forcing drivers to stop and exposing them to potential robberies or assaults.

Tyre Spiking: A Startling Case on the N4

One recent incident near the KaNyamazane turn-off on the N4 highlights the risks. A woman driving at night experienced a puncture caused by spiked objects placed on the road. While only her handbag was stolen, she was fortunate to escape unharmed. A passer-by came to her aid, helping her replace the tyre so she could continue her journey to Malalane.

The victim later disclosed that she decided against reporting the incident to authorities. “Such crimes happen everywhere in the country. I was unharmed, so I didn’t feel the need to open a case. My bag had nothing valuable in it, and I was fortunate to be rescued by a Good Samaritan,” she said.

Police Encourage Reporting

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, has emphasized the importance of reporting all criminal activities. He noted that documenting incidents like tyre spiking allows the police to analyze trends, allocate resources effectively, and take preventative action in high-risk areas.

“It’s crucial to report crimes not only to ensure investigations but also to help us gather accurate statistics. This enables us to deploy our resources to areas where they are needed most,” Mdhluli explained.

He also described some of the methods used by criminals, which include:

  • Cooldrink Bottles or Cans: Nails are placed inside bottles or cans to puncture tyres.
  • Wooden Planks: These are covered with plastic and embedded with nails to camouflage their dangerous contents.
  • Sharp Steel Objects: Pieces of steel with pointed edges are strategically placed to damage tyres.

Mdhluli advised motorists to avoid driving over debris or suspicious objects on the road. If a tyre is punctured, drivers should not stop immediately but instead proceed to a safer location before inspecting the damage. “Call the police, a friend, or a family member if you are in trouble. Do not stop in an unsafe area,” he urged.

Mdhluli also issued a stern warning to those involved in tyre spiking, stating that perpetrators would face severe consequences if caught.

Government Takes Action

The Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison has also spoken out against tyre spiking, calling it a dangerous and unacceptable practice. Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi condemned the criminal activity, emphasizing its potential to cause accidents and endanger lives, especially during the busy holiday season.

“Our roads will soon be filled with people traveling to holiday destinations. Spiking tyres creates unnecessary risks, not just for motorists but for everyone on the road. We are calling on those engaging in this practice to stop immediately,” said Mmusi.

To combat the issue, the department has announced plans to deploy officers to known hotspot areas along the N4 and other high-risk routes. Mmusi also urged the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities.

How to Stay Safe on the Roads

To minimize the risk of falling victim to tyre spiking, motorists should take the following precautions:

  1. Avoid Driving Over Debris: Be cautious of objects lying on the road, especially at night.
  2. Do Not Stop Immediately: If your tyre is punctured, drive slowly to a well-lit, populated area before stopping.
  3. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Save the numbers of local police stations, roadside assistance, and trusted friends or family.
  4. Report Suspicious Activities: Inform the police immediately if you notice suspicious behavior or objects on the road.

Conclusion

Tyre spiking is a dangerous criminal tactic that poses significant risks to motorists, particularly during the festive season when roads are busier than usual. Authorities are taking steps to address the issue by increasing patrols and raising public awareness. However, the cooperation of drivers is essential in ensuring safety. By staying vigilant, reporting incidents, and following safety guidelines, motorists can protect themselves and others from these harmful acts.

The festive season should be a time of joy and celebration, not fear. With the right precautions and community support, motorists can travel safely and enjoy the holiday season without unnecessary risks.
