Late Applications at Unisa
SHARE

As the academic year approaches, many students find themselves in a flurry of worry and confusion, especially those who, for various reasons, missed the initial application deadlines for the University of South Africa (Unisa). If you are among these students, take a deep breath. The process for late applications at Unisa might be your beacon of hope. This guide aims to demystify the late application process at Unisa for 2024 and highlight some programmes that are still open for admissions.

Understanding Late Applications

Late applications are a second chance for prospective students to apply for their desired programmes. However, it is critical to note that late applications are subject to the availability of space and academic capacity. Unisa, being one of the largest distance learning institutions globally, offers this window of opportunity, but it is essential to act quickly and decisively.

Steps to Navigate the Late Application Process

Selection Process:

  • The selection process is centred around a calculation of your individual points score, which considers your final Grade 12 marks and other key factors such as the school you attended, and your gender, socio-economic group, race, and so on.
  • If you do manage to meet the selection criteria, it is important to note that you will not automatically be accepted to study through Unisa in 2024. Students will be accommodated based on the number of spaces available for each qualification.
Late Applications at Unisa

Unisa Application Process

1. Choose your qualification: You can apply for a maximum of two qualifications at UNISA, ranked in order of preference (although you may only register for one should both of your applications be successful).

2. Wait for the outcome of your application: Unisa will inform you of the outcome of your application. If successful, Unisa will indicate which qualification you have been accepted and will offer you a space for the period for which you have applied (e.g. semester 2).

3. Accept Unisa’s offer: You must accept or decline Unisa’s offer within the defined period. If you miss this deadline, Unisa will withdraw the offer and give your space to another applicant.

Note: First-time applicants to Unisa will be required to complete the First-Year Experience MOOC (massive open online course) before being able to accept Unisa’s offer.

Remember that you may only accept one offer. This means that when you accept an offer for one qualification, the other offer will automatically fall away.

If you accept Unisa’s offer, you must register for the period for which you have been granted admission. Should you not register for the relevant semester of study, you will need to re-apply for admission during the next application period.

Who Must Apply?

  • If you want to start a new qualification, you must apply for admission. This includes first-time Unisa applicants and Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or specialty.
  • If you are completing a higher certificate, you must apply for admission if you want to continue with undergraduate studies.
  • if you previously applied for admission and were offered a space but did not accept the offer and/or did not register for any reason, you must re-apply for admission.
  • If you plan to enrol for classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement, you must apply for admission.

An Important Question to Ask Yourself Before You Apply

Have you ever completed a qualification through distance learning?

Unisa is different from conventional universities because it operates on an Open Distance e-Learning basis. Here is what that means:

1. Embrace a New Learning Landscape:

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) offers a unique educational path where physical distance from the university becomes an advantage for independent learning. Unlike traditional classroom settings, ODeL requires self-direction and time management skills. You will no longer follow daily lectures, but instead, explore learning materials and connect with Unisa digitally. If you are used to residential learning, be prepared to adjust your study habits for this self-paced journey.

2. Support Every Step of the Way:

Despite the physical distance, Unisa fosters a strong support network for its students. From dedicated tutors and counsellors to online resources and tools, you should never feel alone. Take heart, “distance” in ODeL simply means your interactions take place digitally, ensuring consistent and flexible support wherever you are.

Unisa offers an ODeL readiness tool so that you can adequately answer this question for yourself; you can try it here.

Late Applications at Unisa

Programmes Open for Late Applications

While specific programmes available for late applications can vary based on the academic capacity and demand, some programmes tend to have available spaces more often. These may include:

1. Bachelor of Arts (General):

This programme offers a broad perspective on humanities, social sciences, and communication. It’s ideal for students who have yet to decide on a specific career path and wish to explore various disciplines.

2. Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management:

A programme designed for aspiring marketers, focusing on strategic marketing, consumer behaviour, and brand management.

3. Higher Certificate in Law:

This is an entry-level qualification aimed at students looking to get a foundational understanding of the legal system in South Africa.

4. Diploma in Information Technology:

Ideal for students interested in the IT field, focusing on software development, information systems, and network engineering.

Final Thoughts

Late applications can be a stressful time, but with the right approach and a clear understanding of the process, it is possible to secure a spot at Unisa. Remember to act quickly, stay informed, and follow the application process meticulously. Your educational journey is just a few steps away, and this late application might be the opportunity you have been waiting for to embark on a path of academic and professional growth. Good luck!
