JMPD Criticized for Ignoring N1 Road Spiking Robbery Public Safety MMC Demands Action

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has come under heavy fire following reports of motorists being robbed after accidents caused by deliberate road spiking or the placement of rocks on the N1 freeway in Johannesburg. These incidents have sparked public outrage and led Public Safety MMC Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku to demand an immediate investigation and action to address the growing threat.

A Growing Danger on Johannesburg’s Roads

Motorists have reported encountering hazardous obstacles on key sections of the N1 freeway. Rocks have been seen on the N1 North between the Soweto Highway and Maraisburg off-ramps and on the N1 South between Maraisburg and Rand Show Road off-ramps. These dangerous setups have reportedly caused multiple accidents overnight, turning the roads into a crime hotspot where victims are robbed after crashing.

This surge in road spiking incidents has raised alarms about public safety and law enforcement’s response to these premeditated crimes. Criminals use these tactics to force motorists to stop, leaving them vulnerable to robbery or worse.

A Victim’s Terrifying Ordeal

Social media users have widely shared a video of a motorist describing his harrowing experience after falling victim to a road spiking incident. In the video, the man explains how he noticed the perpetrators approaching him after his car crashed. He attempted to deter them by pretending to pull out a gun, but the robbers quickly realized he was unarmed. One of the suspects then brandished a firearm, while another chased him with an okapi knife.

In his desperation, the motorist fled on foot onto the N1 South, risking his life by running across a busy freeway where vehicles were traveling at high speeds. He tried to flag down a JMPD officer but claims that the officer ignored his pleas for help.

“I ran onto the road, and imagine N1 cars are driving at 120 or 140 km/h. I tried to stop these bloody f*****g metro police guys, who are useless. They just passed,” he said in frustration. The man expressed deep disappointment in the JMPD, questioning how officers could fail to stop for someone being actively chased by armed criminals.

Eventually, the motorist was saved by an Uber driver who stopped to assist. “I’m so disappointed in our law enforcement. I was helped by an Uber driver. I’m sorry to say this, but he was a foreigner. He stopped and they ran,” the motorist said, expressing gratitude to the Good Samaritan while continuing to vent his anger at law enforcement.

Public Safety MMC Demands Accountability

Responding to the viral video, MMC Tshwaku called the incident a serious violation of law enforcement standards. He has ordered JMPD’s internal affairs division to investigate the matter and identify the officers involved. “This was a serious violation of law enforcement code of conduct, and I wish the complaint had a photo of the car passing by and a number plate to link the officer in the car and charge him or her,” Tshwaku said on social media. “This was unacceptable.”

JMPD’s Response and Action Plan

Acknowledging the rise in road spiking incidents, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla admitted that the issue has become a significant problem in Gauteng, particularly in Johannesburg. He highlighted the collaboration between JMPD and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to address these crimes.

“Spiking on the roads has become a serious problem, especially on the M1 between Nasrec and Maraisburg,” Fihla said in an interview with eNCA. “Officers are monitoring the area, but we know that any criminal activities reported are ultimately handled by SAPS.”

Fihla added that JMPD is working to increase patrols and improve coordination with other law enforcement agencies to combat the surge in these incidents.

Public Concern Mounts

The recent spate of road spiking cases has fueled widespread public concern, with citizens demanding stronger measures to ensure their safety. Many have criticized the perceived lack of urgency and effectiveness in the JMPD’s response, calling for accountability and immediate action to address these life-threatening crimes.

While JMPD’s promises of enhanced monitoring and collaboration are a step forward, the public’s trust in law enforcement remains shaken. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and report suspicious activity as the investigation unfolds.

A Call for Swift Justice

The N1 road spiking incidents underscore the urgent need for law enforcement to prioritize public safety and restore confidence in their ability to protect citizens. As the JMPD works with SAPS to address these crimes, the public awaits tangible results from their efforts. For now, motorists must remain vigilant and hope that decisive action will soon bring an end to this dangerous and distressing trend.
