Leadership Shakeup in the Free State
The Free State province is experiencing a major political shift as Jabu Mbalula, brother to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, assumes the role of acting Premier. This appointment follows the controversial leave of incumbent Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, who faces serious corruption allegations.
Letsoha-Mathae, who has been in office since June 2024, is accused of accepting bribes, including luxury vehicles and cash payments, from businessman Patrick Phuti to secure a R269-million road construction tender. Amid mounting scrutiny, the Hawks have launched a corruption probe, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have opened a case against her and her husband, Mangaung Metropolitan Speaker Lawrence Mathae.
While the Free State Premier’s office attributes her leave to a medical procedure, critics view it as an attempt to sidestep accountability.
Jabu Mbalula Steps In
Jabu Mbalula, currently the MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, will act as Premier from November 15 to December 15, 2024. Sworn in during a ceremony at the provincial legislature, he pledged to uphold the Constitution and serve with “honour and dignity.”
Mbalula brings experience from his tenure as Free State ANC spokesperson and South Africa’s Ambassador to Romania. His appointment is seen as an effort to ensure governance continuity during Letsoha-Mathae’s absence.
Political Reactions and EFF Opposition
The appointment has sparked mixed reactions. The ANC’s provincial leadership has defended the decision, emphasizing the need for stability. Acting Head of Communication Setjhaba Maphalla stated:
“Acting Premier Mbalula steps into the role with extensive experience… ensuring continued progress and prosperity.”
However, the EFF has rejected the move, labelling it an “insult to the people of the Free State.” The party criticized the ANC for failing to enforce its step-aside policy, which requires leaders accused of corruption to vacate their positions. The EFF also highlighted allegations linking Jabu Mbalula to corruption and ghost worker scandals during his time in Mangaung Metro Municipality.

The leadership change comes as the province grapples with service delivery challenges and growing distrust in governance. Observers note that Jabu Mbalula’s appointment may either stabilize the administration or deepen divisions within the ANC and the province.
