If you have lost your phone, damaged your SIM card, or upgraded to a new device, you may need a SIM swap. Knowing how to do a SIM swap on MTN is essential, especially in South Africa, where mobile numbers are tied to banking, government, and essential services.

A SIM swap lets you keep your number, airtime, data, and subscriptions. The process is straightforward if you follow MTN’s official steps. However, due to rising SIM swap fraud, it is important to understand both the process and the security measures.

What is a SIM Swap?

A SIM swap is when your mobile operator deactivates your old SIM card and transfers your number to a new one. This ensures you keep your existing number while replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged SIM.

In South Africa, the process is regulated by the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA), which requires valid identification during SIM registration.

If you’re a Cell C customer, read our full guide on How to Do a Sim Swap on Cell C: A Step-by-Step Guide.

Why MTN Customers Need to Understand the Process

MTN South Africa has over 36 million subscribers. With such a large user base, SIM swap requests are common. According to MTN’s official support portal:

“To complete a SIM swap, you need to purchase and activate a new SIM card. Once done, you can dial 1353# to begin the swap.” MTN South Africa

The process is customer-friendly but requires security steps to protect users from fraud.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Do A Sim Swap on MTN

Follow these steps to perform a SIM swap safely:

Step 1: Buy and Activate a New MTN SIM Card

You can purchase a replacement SIM card at any MTN store or authorised retailer. Activate it before starting the process.

Step 2: Insert the New SIM Card

Place the new SIM into your device. Ensure it has network coverage.

Step 3: Dial *135*3#

From your new SIM, dial *135*3# to begin the SIM swap process.

Step 4: Provide Verification Details

You may need to confirm your ID number, old phone number, or personal account details.

Step 5: Confirm the SIM Swap

MTN will send an SMS to your old number if possible. If you did not request the swap, you can reject it.

Step 6: Wait for Activation

Once approved, your number will move to the new SIM. This usually takes minutes but may take up to 24 hours.

Requirements for a SIM Swap

To complete a SIM swap on MTN, you need the following:

  • A valid South African ID or passport (as per RICA rules)
  • An active replacement SIM card
  • Knowledge of your old number
  • Personal details for verification (for example, last recharge amount or frequently dialled numbers)

For postpaid (contract) customers, MTN may require an in-store visit with biometric authentication.

How Long Does the MTN SIM Swap Take?

The swap is usually instant, but in some cases it can take up to 24 hours. If it takes longer, you should contact MTN customer care on 135 from another MTN line or visit the nearest store.

Security Risks: The Rise of SIM Swap Fraud

South Africa has one of the highest SIM swap fraud rates globally. According to the Communication Risk Information Centre (Comric), SIM-swap fraud is costing South Africa about R5.3 billion annually.

Comric CEO Thokozani Mvelase notes:

“Cybersecurity ranks in the top three global risks by likelihood and impact in the next two years.”

This makes understanding the process and protecting yourself even more critical.

How MTN Protects Customers from Fraud

MTN applies several layers of security:

  • Knowledge-based authentication to verify your identity
  • SMS notifications to your old SIM to reject unauthorised swaps
  • Predictive analytics to detect suspicious activity
  • In-store biometric verification for contract customers

MTN told MyBroadband:

“MTN systems are designed to only allow frontline staff to access their accounts when a verified customer request is received.”

How to Protect Yourself from SIM Swap Fraud

As a customer, you should take these steps:

  1. Never share OTPs or PINs with anyone.
  2. Register for app-based banking authentication instead of SMS OTPs.
  3. Immediately report SMS notifications of SIM swaps you did not request.
  4. Keep your RICA details up to date.
  5. Where possible, complete SIM swaps in person at an MTN store.

Alternatives: When a SIM Swap is Not the Answer

If you are switching from another network to MTN, you need a number port rather than a SIM swap. Number porting allows you to keep your existing number while changing networks. The process is different and requires an SMS to 3232 with your number and the new SIM ICCID.

Expert Opinions on Digital Identity and Mobile Safety

Industry experts argue that digital identity will be crucial in reducing SIM swap fraud. Gur Geva, founder of iiDENTIFii, said:

“In order to combat SIM swap and identity fraud, networks should focus on the provision of simple, scalable and safe digital identity.”

This shows that SIM swaps are not just a convenience issue; they affect broader mobile security and financial access.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I do a SIM swap online?

For prepaid customers, yes. Dial 1353# from the new SIM. For contract customers, you may need to visit a store.

Do I need to pay for a SIM swap?

The new SIM card costs money, but the swap process itself is free.

What if I don’t remember my old details?

Visit an MTN store with your ID. Staff will assist you.

Stay Connected and Stay Safe

Knowing how to do a SIM swap on MTN is essential for every customer. The process is simple: buy a new SIM, dial *135*3#, and verify your details. However, with SIM swap fraud on the rise, customers must stay alert.

By following MTN’s official guidelines, verifying your identity, and staying informed about security risks, you can protect your number and your finances.
