Incident Sparks Outrage Over Alleged Racism and Disruptive Behavior on FlySafair Flight
The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has announced plans to report Nobuntu Mkhize, a FlySafair passenger whose disruptive and allegedly racist behaviour went viral, to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The incident, which unfolded on a Boxing Day flight from Durban to Cape Town, has drawn widespread condemnation from political parties and the public.
What Happened on the Flight?
On December 26, Nobuntu Mkhize, identified as a 43-year-old SABC employee, was captured on video engaging in disruptive and riotous behaviour. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the passenger demanded alcohol while airborne and insulted other passengers and crew.
Mkhize also made racially charged remarks targeting a member of the coloured community, stating, “You’re a coloured from Mitchells Plain, all these gold rings but no degree.” The altercation ended with Mkhize being restrained and subsequently arrested upon landing.
Legal and Corporate Responses
The South African Police Service confirmed that Mkhize was charged under the Civil Aviation Act No. 13 of 2009 for her actions on the flight. However, the case was temporarily withdrawn pending further investigation and the possibility of additional charges.
FlySafair responded firmly, banning Mkhize from all future flights. “We are implementing measures to ensure she does not fly with us again,” the airline stated via X (formerly Twitter).
Political Outrage and Human Rights Complaint
PA Deputy President Kenny Kunene condemned Mkhize’s remarks, calling them divisive and a violation of the Constitution’s principles of unity and respect.
“Racism, irrespective of its source, has no place in South Africa. The Patriotic Alliance will lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission and follow the matter closely to ensure justice is served,” Kunene said.
Similarly, DA Western Cape leader Tertius Simmers emphasized the importance of inclusivity and equality, stating, “This sort of behaviour has no place in a democratic society. We stand in solidarity with the victim.”
The African National Congress (ANC) also expressed disapproval after Mkhize claimed to be “an ANC b**ch” during the incident. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri distanced the party from Mkhize’s actions and indicated that an investigation into her party membership would be conducted.
SABC’s Internal Investigation
The SABC has acknowledged the incident, stating it would address the matter through its internal procedures. The broadcaster dismissed claims that the altercation would air on SABC News despite Mkhize’s threats during the altercation.
Public Reaction and Broader Implications
The video of the incident has sparked a nationwide conversation about racism, public behaviour, and accountability. Social media users have called for stricter regulations and harsher penalties for passengers who disrupt flights.
As the SAHRC complaint progresses, South Africans remain focused on whether Mkhize will face further consequences for her actions.
