FIFA has officially confirmed the top 10 highest-ranked football nations in Africa, with Morocco continuing to lead the continent. The latest rankings, released after the first international break of 2025, reflect the performance of African teams in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Morocco Leads the Way
Morocco remains Africa’s number-one team, climbing two spots in the global rankings from 14th to 12th. The Atlas Lions have been one of the most consistent teams on the continent, maintaining their dominance through impressive performances in both friendlies and competitive matches.
Senegal and Egypt Maintain Strong Positions
Senegal, currently ranked 19th in the world, holds the second spot in Africa. The 2021 AFCON champions continue to be a formidable force, boasting a squad filled with talent from Europe’s top leagues. Meanwhile, Egypt has climbed to 32nd globally, securing third place among CAF nations. Their recent World Cup qualifying victories have boosted their position.
Algeria and Ivory Coast Among Africa’s Top Five
Algeria, who have also performed well in the World Cup qualifiers, now sit in 36th place globally and fourth in Africa. Ivory Coast follows closely in 41st, reaffirming their reputation as one of the continent’s footballing powerhouses.
Nigeria and Tunisia Stay Competitive
Nigeria, ranked 43rd in the world, takes sixth place in Africa. Despite some inconsistencies in recent matches, the Super Eagles remain one of the strongest teams in CAF competitions. Tunisia, the biggest mover among African teams, jumped from 52nd to 49th in the world, now sitting in seventh place in Africa.
Cameroon, Mali, and South Africa Complete the Top 10
Cameroon occupies eighth place in Africa with a world ranking of 50th. Mali follows in ninth with a 53rd-place ranking. The final spot in Africa’s top 10 is held by South Africa, ranked 56th in the world.
Bafana Bafana’s Rise in the Rankings
South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, has seen an impressive resurgence under head coach Hugo Broos. Their recent victories over Lesotho and Benin in the World Cup qualifiers extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches. Although they moved up just one place in the world rankings, their form has secured them a spot in Africa’s top 10.
