Dis-Chem has officially launched its new Better Rewards Programme in partnership with Capitec, offering shoppers across South Africa enhanced savings and health-linked benefits. The programme, which goes live on 21 October 2025, is designed to provide instant discounts at tills and support better health outcomes.

A Major Shift in Loyalty Programmes

Unlike traditional points-based systems, Better Rewards gives customers immediate value at checkout. With over 140 trusted brands and more than 10,000 products included, shoppers will receive an ongoing 10% discount on everyday essentials.

This real-time model allows customers to plan their budgets more effectively, especially with consistently participating brands. Importantly, these discounts also apply to promotional items. That means no more choosing between loyalty rewards and sales; customers can enjoy both.

“This is the next chapter, unlocking real value and giving instant rewards where South Africans need them most,” said Dis-Chem CEO Rui Morais.

Capitec customers stand to gain even more. If you pay with a Capitec debit or credit card, you’ll get an extra 5% off on your qualifying basket. That boosts the total discount to 15%.

Capitec, South Africa’s largest retail bank, currently serves over 25 million account holders. This strategic partnership significantly expands access to affordable, integrated primary healthcare via Dis-Chem’s retail footprint.

“We bring on partners that meet clients at the tills, in their homes, and in their wallets,” said Kelly Goldsworthy, Head of Live Better at Capitec.

New Pharmacy Boost Encourages Medication Adherence

The programme includes a feature called Pharmacy Boost. Members get an additional 5% off when they fill a prescription or buy over-the-counter medication. The discount applies for 30 days from the date of the pharmacy visit.

This move addresses a critical public health concern: chronic medication non-adherence. According to Dis-Chem, low adherence rates contribute to preventable complications like strokes, heart attacks, and uncontrolled diabetes.

“Our focus on primary healthcare addresses the fundamentals of non-communicable diseases,” said Morais.

Unlocking More Value with Insurance Products

Customers with qualifying insurance policies unlock even greater benefits. Holders of Dis-Chem Health, Gap Cover, or Dis-Chem Life policies receive a minimum 20% discount.

In addition, Dis-Chem Life policyholders get a free annual HealthCheck at Dis-Chem Clinics. These checks determine a Health Rating, which can unlock up to 100% off qualifying products, capped at R3,000 per month.

The initiative incentivises health management and empowers South Africans to take control of their wellbeing while saving money.

Rewards for Dis-Chem Staff and Existing Members

More than 22,000 Dis-Chem employees will also benefit. Staff members receive a 10% additional boost on their rewards from 1 October 2025.

Existing Benefit Card loyalty members, currently numbering around 9 million, will be migrated to the Better Rewards system automatically. Their existing points remain valid for six months after the transition.

Aligning With National Healthcare Priorities

South Africa faces growing pressure to manage non-communicable diseases and improve access to affordable care. According to the 2025 Loyalty Programs Intelligence Report, loyalty schemes are increasingly integrating health incentives and instant rewards.

Dis-Chem’s new model reflects this trend by combining retail value with public health goals. As Morais noted, the shift also aligns with the company’s broader move from pharmacy retail to integrated primary healthcare provision.

Dis-Chem’s Better Rewards Programme, especially when paired with Capitec perks, provides tangible financial and health benefits for millions of South Africans.

With its instant savings, inclusive features, and commitment to better health outcomes, the programme represents a significant innovation in retail loyalty, one that responds to both economic and public health priorities.
