Ekurhuleni’s Political Arena Heats Up: ANC vs MK Party in 2026
The political landscape in the City of Ekurhuleni is set for a dramatic showdown as the ANC prepares to face stiff competition from the newly-formed MK party in the 2026 local government elections. With the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party making its debut in municipal elections, Ekurhuleni—a key municipality in Gauteng—has emerged as a focal point for both parties.
MK Party’s Emergence in Ekurhuleni
The MK party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, has identified Ekurhuleni as its stronghold in Gauteng. The party, which gained significant support during the 2024 general elections, is determined to strengthen its foothold in the region. Senior leader Dali Mpofu emphasized the party’s ambition to take full control of the municipality during a recent rally. The MK party’s first birthday celebration, scheduled for December in Ekurhuleni, is expected to solidify its presence.
ANC’s Response to the Challenge
The ANC, which lost outright control of Ekurhuleni in 2021, currently governs through a coalition with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and smaller parties. Despite holding key positions like finance and the mayoralty, the ANC is acutely aware of the threat posed by the MK party. Jongizizwe Dlabathi, ANC Regional Task Team (RTT) coordinator, acknowledged the growing influence of the MK party, attributing it to Jacob Zuma’s strong support base and the tribal loyalty in certain areas.
A Battle for Votes
The rivalry between the ANC and the MK party reflects broader trends in South African politics, where new parties frequently poach support from established ones. Dlabathi noted, “Every political party that is established has a potential risk to the ANC.” Despite these challenges, the ANC remains optimistic, with plans to secure an outright majority in the upcoming elections.

The ANC is leveraging its coalition leadership in Ekurhuleni to demonstrate improved service delivery and rebuild public trust. Dlabathi emphasized the party’s commitment to providing tangible benefits to residents, a move aimed at consolidating voter support ahead of the elections.
