Gauteng taxi industry leaders and members came together as the Johannesburg, Midrand, Tembisa Taxi Association (JMTTA) ushered in a new era of leadership following a successful elective conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on April 23 at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park. The event drew together influential stakeholders and members of the taxi industry from across the region to reflect on the association’s progress and chart a path for the future.

A Festive Start to the Day

The day began on a high note with spirited performances from popular gospel artists Dumi Mkokstad and Mthandeni SK, setting a vibrant and celebratory tone for the proceedings. The atmosphere was one of unity and optimism as members prepared to cast their votes and discuss the association’s trajectory.

Unity and Participation from Across the Region

Nineteen affiliated taxi associations participated in the event, signaling strong cohesion and commitment within the industry. Outgoing deputy chairperson Mr. Sibeko received a warm welcome as he opened the conference with an address that was both reflective and forward-looking.

A detailed report presented during the AGM outlined the JMTTA’s achievements, challenges, and strategic developments over the past year. The presentation highlighted innovations and operational improvements that have shaped the association’s progress.

Public Praise for Transformative Leadership

Sibeko’s contributions received high praise from both colleagues and the commuting public. Chris Ngobeni, a frequent taxi user, commended Sibeko’s leadership for improving safety and reliability in the sector.

“Since Mr. Sibeko took office, I’ve felt much safer using taxis. I even stopped driving my own car, and I’ve saved a lot of money. His leadership has truly changed my life,” Ngobeni said.

Election Results Reflect Strong Support

In a resounding show of support, Sibeko was re-elected as chairperson with 120 votes. Joining him in leadership are Mr. Nzaba and Mr. Thwala, who were elected as deputy chairpersons. Expressing gratitude for the renewed mandate, Sibeko said:

“I am humbled and honoured to be re-elected as the chairperson of JMTTA. I look forward to working closely with our members to ensure our taxi services remain safe, efficient, and reliable for all.”

Members Welcome Continued Leadership

The results of the election were warmly received by association members. Nkosi Nxumalo, one of the many who supported Sibeko’s leadership, said:

“I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Mr. Sibeko has played a key role in shaping the future of our industry, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead under his continued guidance.”

Gauteng Taxi Industry

As the Gauteng taxi industry moves forward under renewed leadership, there is a shared sense of hope and commitment to strengthening public transport and addressing the needs of both operators and commuters in Johannesburg, Midrand, and Tembisa.

The successful election and overwhelming support for the reappointment of Mr. Sibeko as chairperson mark a significant moment for the Gauteng taxi industry. With strong leadership, renewed unity among associations, and a clear vision for the future, the industry is well-positioned to tackle ongoing challenges and improve service delivery. As Johannesburg, Midrand, and Tembisa continue to grow, the JMTTA’s leadership will play a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and accessible transport for the communities it serves
