Today’s Weather Alert: Residents and motorists in Gauteng are urged to be alert due to the Severe Weather Warning issued today by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). It is important to be extra cautious when you are out and about, as there’s a threat of heavy rains, intense thunderstorms and powerful winds. Here’s what you should know if you are driving or going about your normal daily activities.

Today’s Weather Alert: What is the forecast?

SAWS issued a yellow level 2 warning today for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng and surrounding provinces. Storms will bring high winds and lightning.

This could cause localised flooding in areas that have poor drainage or are near low-lying areas. Lightning and strong winds can cause trees to fall. Staying informed and prepared is essential if you’re in Gauteng.

Storms will affect areas like Mpumalanga and North West, as well as parts of the East Rand. You should be aware of the current weather conditions if you live in or work near these areas.

3. Lightning Strikes

Another serious threat is lightning. During thunderstorms, the risk of electric fires or power failures increases. Lightning can also cause serious injuries or even death, especially when caught outside. It’s better to delay outdoor activities such as golfing or fishing until the weather improves.

4. Reduced visibility for drivers

Visibility is likely to be low on the road due to the combination of rain, thunderstorms and fog. Driving will become more dangerous as road markings and other vehicles will be difficult to see. In these conditions, drivers should reduce their speed and increase the following distance. They should also switch on their headlights.
