ANC’s Fikile Mbalula Condemns AfriForum for Defending Bergview College Principal Amid Child Rape Allegations
#JusticeForCweCwe: National Outrage Over Alleged Child Rape at Bergview College
The alleged rape of a seven-year-old pupil at Bergview College in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has provoked national outrage, with thousands demanding swift justice. The incident, which reportedly occurred in October 2024, has now taken a political turn as ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula accuses AfriForum of protecting the school’s principal, who has been linked to the case.
Mbalula Slams AfriForum for “Shielding” Principal
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, Mbalula strongly condemned the organization for defending the Bergview College principal, who allegedly refused to provide a DNA sample to the police.
“We are outraged and deeply saddened by the brutal violation of a seven-year-old child in Matatiele,” said Mbalula. “More disgraceful is the involvement of organisations like AfriForum, who shield suspects rather than stand for justice.”
He further stressed that gender-based violence (GBV) must not be politicized, calling on all South Africans to stand together in fighting such crimes.
AfriForum Responds: “The Principal Is Not a Suspect”
AfriForum’s private prosecutions unit has denied claims that they are protecting a suspect. Spokesperson Barry Bateman stated that the principal has never been formally considered a suspect by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“He is not a suspect in the case, nor have the SAPS ever regarded him as one,” said Bateman. “There is no evidence that the offence took place on school grounds or that he had any contact with the victim.”
National Protests and Public Outrage
The #JusticeForCweCwe movement has gained momentum, with thousands of South Africans protesting across major cities. The EFF, MK Party, and ATM have also joined the calls for justice.
The SAPS has reassured the public that investigations are ongoing, while activists demand swift arrests.
“Enough is enough. We will not rest until every woman and child in South Africa is safe from such despicable acts,” Mbalula added.
