55-Year-Old Suspect Caught Smuggling Cocaine from Brazil
Gauteng police have once again intercepted a drug mule at OR Tambo International Airport, highlighting the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking. A 55-year-old Nigerian national was arrested on Tuesday after landing from São Paulo, Brazil.
Police Intercept Suspect Carrying Cocaine
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk confirmed that the suspect was taken for a medical X-ray, which revealed multiple foreign objects inside his body. These objects, suspected to be drug bullets filled with cocaine, were being expelled from the suspect’s system.
“The suspect, who is still releasing bullets, is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this week,” van Wyk stated.
Recent Drug Mule Arrests at OR Tambo
This arrest follows a series of drug-related interceptions at OR Tambo. Just last month, police apprehended two drug mules carrying cocaine worth an estimated R7.5 million.
- A female suspect was caught with R2.5 million worth of cocaine.
- A male suspect was found carrying R5 million worth of cocaine in his luggage.
Last year, authorities at OR Tambo International Airport arrested several individuals smuggling drugs from Brazil. In September, a 21-year-old South African woman expelled 110 drug bullets—the highest number recorded in eight years.
Ongoing Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
The South African Police Service (SAPS) and South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs continue their vigilance in curbing drug smuggling. The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, commended law enforcement officers for their commitment to intercepting illicit substances before they reach South African streets.
As law enforcement agencies intensify operations at OR Tambo International Airport, authorities warn that drug mules will continue to face severe legal consequences.
