Transforming Communities Through Retailer Commissions and Financial Inclusion

The National Lottery, under the stewardship of ITHUBA, is more than just a game of chance—it is a significant economic driver that strengthens independent businesses, supports township entrepreneurs, and fuels South Africa’s broader economic growth.

Empowering Small Businesses Through Retailer Commissions

Since taking over as the National Lottery operator in June 2015, ITHUBA has revolutionized the gaming industry while uplifting local businesses. To date, over R3.1 billion in commissions has been paid to retailers, with independent retailers receiving over R351 million. These commissions have enabled small business owners, particularly those in townships, to expand their operations, create jobs, and reinvest in their communities.

Charmaine Mabuza, CEO of ITHUBA, has been at the forefront of this transformation. She emphasizes the importance of financial inclusion and economic empowerment, particularly for previously marginalized groups.

“As Business South Africa, we recognize the challenges within the township economy, particularly for spaza shop owners. It is up to us to take the lead in restoring economic power to our communities,” said Mabuza.

Real Stories of Economic Transformation

A shining example of the National Lottery’s impact is Busisiwe Mpanza, owner of Charo’s Trading in Diepkloof, Soweto. Before becoming a National Lottery retailer in 2016, her spaza shop struggled due to increasing competition. However, after introducing a National Lottery machine, her business saw remarkable growth.

“My business started thriving, allowing me to pay my son’s tuition fees, support my family, and even invest in my home,” Mpanza shared. “With the improved income, I was able to help my son open his own business in 2018 and enrol my granddaughter in a better school.”

The National Lottery: A Catalyst for Economic Growth

Beyond retail commissions, the National Lottery has played a crucial role in boosting local economies. By supporting small and independent businesses, particularly black-owned enterprises in townships, ITHUBA ensures sustainable economic development.

  • Job Creation: Small retailers hire more staff as their businesses grow.
  • Increased Investment: Retailers reinvest profits into their stores and infrastructure.
  • Education & Family Support: Business owners fund their children’s education and improve living standards.

ITHUBA’s Commitment to Financial Inclusion

ITHUBA remains dedicated to ensuring that the National Lottery serves as a vehicle for economic transformation. The organization’s efforts to drive financial inclusion have created lasting opportunities for South African entrepreneurs, proving that the Lottery is much more than just a game—it is a tool for economic empowerment.

The National Lottery, powered by ITHUBA, is not only transforming lives through jackpot winnings but also by strengthening South Africa’s economy. With billions paid in retailer commissions, township entrepreneurs are thriving, creating jobs, and uplifting their communities. As ITHUBA continues to expand its impact, the National Lottery remains a key player in driving sustainable economic growth.
