The 13th Annual Gauteng Sports Awards, held on 24 November at the University of Johannesburg’s Auckland Park Campus, celebrated South Africa’s outstanding sporting talent. The ceremony brought together athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts to honor those who have achieved excellence and inspired the nation over the past year. From emerging prodigies to seasoned Olympians, the event was a testament to the country’s rich sporting heritage and bright future.
Gauteng Sports Awards: Rising Star Shines Bright
One of the most memorable highlights of the evening was the recognition of Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng, who was crowned Sports Personality of the Year. At just 20 years old, Mofokeng is already being hailed as the next big thing in South African football, and this award solidifies his growing legacy.
Mofokeng’s rise to stardom has been swift yet well-earned. Since joining the Orlando Pirates Youth Academy in 2022 and graduating to the senior team a year later, he has quickly become the club’s poster boy. This season alone, he has scored four goals and provided five assists in 15 matches, showcasing his exceptional flair and command on the field. His talents have not gone unnoticed internationally, as he recently attended trials with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, and several European clubs are reportedly monitoring him closely.
Mofokeng’s growing list of accolades includes being named PSL Young Player of the Season and Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament. His victory at the Gauteng Sports Awards adds another feather to his cap, making him one of the most decorated young athletes in South Africa.
Although Mofokeng could not attend the ceremony, his mother, Maomi Mofokeng, accepted the award on his behalf. Speaking with pride, she said:
“I’m very honored to come here today and receive this award for him. Relebohile is always a respectful, humble soul. Thank you to everyone who voted for him.”

“It’s always nice being celebrated, but the financial backing means a lot to us athletes. We can’t do it without the finances.”

- Bayanda Walaza, a silver medalist in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Paris Olympics, who was named Sportsman of the Year.
- Paralympic discus gold medalist Simone Kruger, who won Sportswoman with a Disability.
- Renowned swimming coach Rocco Meiring, who earned the title of Coach of the Year for his dedication to nurturing South Africa’s swimming talent.
South African Rugby Honored Globally
The celebration of South African sporting achievements extended beyond the Gauteng Sports Awards. At the World Rugby Awards, Pieter-Steph du Toit was named Men’s Player of the Year, while seven Springboks were selected for the Men’s 15’s Team of the Year. Additionally, Selvyn Davids, captain of Team SA’s Sevens squad, earned a spot in the Men’s Sevens Dream Team following his team’s bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics.
