2025 NSFAS Applications are Officially Open: When and When to Apply

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government initiative that provides financial assistance to eligible students pursuing tertiary education at public universities and TVET colleges. For 2025, applications are now open, offering support for tuition fees, accommodation, textbooks, and other study-related expenses.

Who Can Qualify?

To qualify for NSFAS funding, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• South African citizen
• Accepted or planning to enroll at a public university or TVET college
• Household income less than R350,000 per year
• For students with disabilities, the household income must not exceed R600,000 per year.

Additionally, recipients of SASSA grants automatically qualify for NSFAS funding. Students already receiving NSFAS funding need not reapply but must ensure their academic performance meets the required standards to continue receiving support.

How and Where to Apply

Applications can be submitted online via the official NSFAS website www.nsfas.org.za. Applicants should follow these steps:

1. Visit the NSFAS website and create a myNSFAS account.
2. Complete the online application form by providing personal details, academic information, and supporting documents (ID copy, proof of household income, etc.).
3. Submit the application and regularly check your myNSFAS account for updates.

What Documents Are Needed?

To complete the application, ensure you have the following:

• Certified copy of your South African ID or birth certificate.
• Certified copies of parent’s/guardian’s income or SASSA grant slips.
• Proof of acceptance into a public institution.
• Disability certificate if applicable.

Application Deadline

NSFAS encourages students to apply as soon as possible, as the deadline is 15 December 2024, and late applications will not be considered. Applicants can track their application status through their myNSFAS account and will be notified once a decision is made.
