Rulani Mokwena’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns has become a topic of discussion amongst fans and pundits alike. While the Brazilians currently dominate the domestic league and Mokwena has recently emphasised that he intends to win all trophies in the next season after the Nedbank Cup upset, reports indicate he might depart Sundowns.
Friction Between Coach and Management Could Lead to Mokwena’s Exit
According to SABC Sport, Mamelodi Sundowns and coach Rulani Mokwena might be parting ways, even though they just signed a 4-year contract a year ago. While no official announcement has been made, talks between Sundowns and Mokwena haven’t been smooth. There’s a strong chance Mokwena might leave the club. Apparently, the source of this surprising situation is a strained relationship between the coach and the sporting director Flemming Berg.
When Berg arrived at Sundowns in April 2022, he came with experience in scouting and development. At the time, Mokwena shared the head coach role with Manqoba Mngqithi. However, Mokwena eventually became the sole head coach, while Berg’s position gave him authority over the technical team, including Mokwena. This shift in power dynamics has caused tension between the two for some time.

SABC Sport also reports that Mokwena, when questioned about a solution to the disagreement, suggested taking a year-long break to allow Berg to continue his plans for the club. This suggests Mokwena prioritizes the team’s success during this critical season, even if it means Berg’s recruitment strategy takes precedence.
This proposal comes despite Mokwena’s recent achievements. He just won the DStv Premiership title in May and was named Coach of the Season, securing Downs’ seventh consecutive championship. However, despite this success, the 37-year-old coach has hinted at underlying issues by publicly voicing doubts about his future.
Club’s Future on the Line
The upcoming transfer window for the 2024/25 season could be another source of friction between the coach and management. The club has already released several key players, including Brian Onyango, Bongani Zungu, Gaston Sirino, and Thabiso Kutumela. Despite this player exodus, Sundowns haven’t announced any replacements and are preparing for pre-season training. Additionally, Mokwena’s absence during player medicals adds to the speculation of him leaving the club.
