Atteridgeville Mass Shooting: Police Hunt Suspects After 5 Killed
SHARE

Five men were shot and killed outside a tuck shop in the Jeffsville area of Atteridgeville in a brazen daylight attack that has triggered a large-scale police manhunt in Gauteng. The shooting happened shortly after 1 pm on Wednesday, with police confirming that the suspects fled the scene immediately and remain at large. Authorities say the motive is still unknown, as specialised units intensify investigations into one of the most serious violent incidents reported in Tshwane this year.

According to police, the victims were standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by an unknown number of suspects who opened fire without warning. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but all five men were declared dead on arrival.

Gunmen Open Fire Without Warning

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the shooting occurred at Block JV in Jeffsville, a densely populated residential area with informal businesses operating nearby.

“The victims were standing outside the tuck shop when they were approached by an unknown number of suspects, who opened fire without saying a word,” Muridili said.

She confirmed that the attack took place in broad daylight and that the suspects fled immediately after the shooting.

“The suspects remain at large,” she added.

Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots, with several witnesses describing scenes of panic as people nearby scattered for safety.

Police Mobilise Specialised Units

Following the attack, Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that senior management had mobilised a range of specialised units to investigate the killings.

According to police, the following teams have been deployed:

  • Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigations
  • Forensic Crime Scene Management
  • Crime Intelligence
  • Provincial Tracking Team

“These units are processing the crime scene, analysing evidence, and conducting interviews with witnesses,” police said.

A case of five counts of murder will be registered, with investigators focusing on identifying the suspects and establishing the motive behind the attack.

SAPS Confirmed Foreign Nationals Among the Victims

SAPS later confirmed that three of the five men killed were foreign nationals. The identities of the remaining two victims have not yet been established.

SAPS Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine said investigators were still verifying information from witnesses and piecing together the sequence of events.

“We are still interviewing witnesses to confirm the number of suspects and what the suspects were using,” Thine said. “It cannot be confirmed at this stage whether the suspects were travelling in a vehicle or were on foot, but it is confirmed that there is a suspect who was seen shooting.”

Thine added that four of the victims were passing by the tuck shop at the time of the attack, while one was about to exit the shop when the shooting began.

“Three bodies have been confirmed and identified, and it is believed that they are foreign nationals,” he said.

Police have not released details about the victims’ nationalities or ages.

Motive Remains Unclear

At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or opportunistic. Brigadier Muridili said determining the motive would form a central part of the investigation.

Authorities have cautioned against speculation, noting that early stages of violent crime investigations often involve multiple possible scenarios, including disputes, extortion-related violence, or organised criminal activity.

No arrests had been made by Wednesday evening.

Crime Scene Processing Continues

Forensic teams remained at the scene for several hours, collecting ballistic evidence, including spent cartridges found near the tuck shop. The area was cordoned off with police tape as investigators documented the scene.

Police are also analysing any available CCTV footage from nearby homes or businesses and following up on information received through crime intelligence channels.

Community members have been urged to assist police by sharing any information that could help identify the suspects.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The Atteridgeville shooting highlights the continued threat of gun violence in residential areas, including spaces used for informal trade and daily community interaction.

For Gauteng residents, the incident underscores:

  • The risk of violent crime occurring in public spaces during daytime hours
  • Ongoing challenges faced by police in preventing and responding to firearm-related murders
  • Increased police operations and visibility in parts of Tshwane following serious violent incidents

The case is likely to intensify scrutiny around crime prevention strategies in townships and informal settlements across the province.

Daylight Shootings Remain a Concern in Gauteng

Gauteng has recorded several high-profile daylight shootings in recent years, with police statistics consistently showing that firearms remain a leading contributor to murder cases in the province.

Law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on intelligence-driven operations and specialised tracking units to respond to violent crime, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas.

However, cases involving unidentified suspects and unclear motives often require extended investigations before arrests can be made.
