A suspected hijacking took a deadly turn this week in the East Rand, when a police trace led to a fatal Tsakane shooting. A violent encounter at a popular fast-food outlet left one suspect dead, one in custody, and another on the run.
Police Trace Hijacked Phone to Tsakane Fast-Food Spot
On Wednesday, police officers from Vosloorus were investigating a hijacking incident involving a stolen vehicle. Inside that vehicle was a cellphone belonging to the victim. Using the phone’s signal, officers traced it to the Spi-Kos Chicken franchise in Tsakane.
According to Sergeant Lebogang Ramaesa of the Tsakane SAPS, the cellphone led police to three suspects who were reportedly buying food at the establishment. All three men were linked to both hijacking and a murder case.

Gunfire Erupts: One Dead in Police Shootout
As soon as the officers arrived at Spi-Kos, the suspects opened fire without warning. The police returned fire. During the exchange, one suspect was fatally wounded. Another suspect was arrested on the spot, while the third managed to flee the scene and is still at large.
The incident shocked bystanders and raised fresh concerns about crime in the area. Sgt Ramaesa confirmed that one of the suspects is a known resident of Duduza, while another is a foreign national.

The Tsakane shooting has sparked strong reactions from the community. Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson Mncedisi Somyo has urged residents to be alert. He warned that hijackings are increasing in and around Tsakane.
