A police officer killed during an armed robbery at Pick n Pay Square in Birch Acres, Gauteng. The incident has sparked outrage and grief across the community, raising renewed calls for urgent crime intervention in hotspot areas like Tembisa and surrounding townships.

According to preliminary reports, the fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday evening, outside Pick n Pay and Pick n Pay Liquor, situated near the McDonald’s at Pick n Pay Square. The slain officer was stationed at Norkem Park Police Station.
As he and his colleagues approached an ongoing robbery in a marked police van, unknown armed suspects opened fire. The officer was shot while still inside the police vehicle.

Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene. Paramedics declared the officer deceased upon arrival. His identity has not yet been released as the family is being notified.
Police Yet to Release Official Statement
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has not yet issued a formal media briefing on the incident. However, investigations are underway, and law enforcement agencies are pursuing leads to apprehend the suspects who fled the scene.
McDonald’s Temporarily Closed as Crime Scene Secured
The nearby McDonald’s restaurant was forced to close operations due to its proximity to the crime scene. Police tape surrounds the area while forensic teams continue to collect evidence.
Public Outcry and Community Reactions
The incident has triggered a wave of emotional responses from local residents and online commentators.
“Tembisa should be declared an area that requires immediate attention by the state,” wrote Webster Kwena Mojela.
“Were the police aware of the ongoing robbery, or did they just happen to be there at the wrong time?” asked Ryaan Chinyoka.
“My deepest condolences to the family. May his courage and service be remembered,” shared Sandile Lengwati Malinga. “I pray that SAPS finds the culprits.”
These heartfelt messages reflect growing frustration over increasing police fatalities and violent crime in Gauteng.
Rising Number of Police Killings in Gauteng
This is not an isolated tragedy. Just weeks ago, a similar case unfolded in Ivory Park where a 31-year-old police constable was shot dead during a routine patrol near another Pick n Pay. That attack also left another officer and a civilian injured.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) confirmed that gunmen ambushed the officers. Investigations are ongoing.

Calls for Urgent Government Intervention
Civic leaders, police unions, and community stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention and better support for officers operating in high-risk zones. The increase in officer deaths during the line of duty reflects a deeper issue of organised, armed criminal syndicates targeting both civilians and state authorities.
Justice Must Prevail
The tragic loss of a dedicated SAPS member in the Pick n Pay Square Robbery in Birch Acres underlines the dangerous conditions officers face daily. It also highlights the urgent need for improved tactical support, intelligence-led policing, and community cooperation.
