South Africans can expect mixed weather this week as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a weather alert for Gauteng. The province faces several days of rain and thunderstorms, while the Western Cape enjoys calm skies and mild temperatures.
Meteorologists say humid tropical air is bringing moisture into the Highveld, increasing the chance of afternoon storms. Meanwhile, a strong high-pressure system over the southwest coast will keep the Western Cape warm and dry.
Gauteng: Rain and Thunderstorms for Most of the Week
Gauteng will see a wet, humid week with a 30% to 60% chance of rain most days. Scattered thunderstorms are expected from Monday through Thursday, with warmer conditions toward the weekend.

SAWS meteorologist Kgomotso Seboko says tropical air is fuelling unstable conditions, which often result in late-afternoon thunderstorms. “We expect widespread showers, lightning and short bursts of heavy rain across much of Gauteng,” she said.
The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to stay alert. Flooding may occur in low-lying areas, and drivers should be cautious on slippery roads. Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time and avoid flooded routes during peak hours.
Western Cape: Sunny Skies and Light Winds
While Gauteng faces rain, the Western Cape will enjoy sunshine, clear skies, and gentle winds. It’s a welcome spell of stability as the province moves toward summer.
Cape Town
- Monday: 12°C / 20°C – Partly cloudy
- Tuesday: 12°C / 20°C – Clear
- Wednesday: 12°C / 22°C – Clear
- Thursday: 14°C / 25°C – Clear

Other Towns
- Paarl: Hot and sunny, with highs reaching 34°C on Thursday.
- Stellenbosch: Mostly clear, around 30°C midweek.
- Swellendam, George, Knysna, and Hermanus: Bright days with light cloud cover and cool evenings, perfect for outdoor plans.
SAWS Cape Town forecaster Lize Brink says a strong high-pressure system is keeping the weather calm and clear. “We expect dry conditions for most of the week. Winds will stay light, and there are no major rain warnings in place,” she said.
The pleasant conditions are ideal for travellers and residents to enjoy outdoor activities such as wine tastings, beach visits, and coastal drives. Local tourism boards say the clear weather should boost weekend getaways across the province.
Travel and Safety Tips
For Gauteng
- Carry a rain jacket or umbrella every day.
- Avoid crossing flooded roads or low bridges.
- Drive slowly and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Follow SAWS weather alerts and check updates regularly.
For the Western Cape
- Expect perfect weather for outdoor activities and travel.
- Stay hydrated and use sunscreen during the hottest part of the day.
- Plan coastal activities early to avoid afternoon winds.
Both provinces should keep monitoring forecasts, as conditions can change quickly, especially in late spring.
Weekend Weather
By Friday, Gauteng’s weather alert will ease as the skies clear and temperatures rise. Sunshine is expected through the weekend, with Pretoria likely to reach the low 30s.
The Western Cape will continue to enjoy calm, dry conditions. Only light coastal clouds are expected, with no significant rainfall on the horizon.
According to SAWS, both regions should experience good weather for travel and outdoor activities by Saturday. Residents are still advised to check local forecasts for any updates.
