Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has given a detailed update on the fitness of several key players, including Mothobi Mvala, Themba Zwane, and Iqraam Rayners, ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League second-leg clash against Remo Stars in Tshwane on Sunday.
The reigning DStv Premiership champions head into the return leg with a commanding 5-1 aggregate lead, putting them on the verge of sealing qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages. However, injuries to some of their top performers have been a concern for the technical team.
Mvala Undergoes Surgery
Cardoso confirmed that defender Mothobi Mvala recently underwent surgery and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“We have some more severe questions like Mothobi Mvala, who had surgery last week. Even before the match, I told the team we should play in his spirit, and they did exactly that,” said Cardoso.
“It’s the most difficult situation we have right now in terms of recovery time. It will take a while before he’s back.”
Positive Signs For Zwane And Others
On a brighter note, the coach shared encouraging news regarding Themba Zwane’s recovery process, as well as minor knocks to other players.
“Zuko is already training normally with the team. Mali picked up a small ankle injury, but nothing is broken, and he’ll be back soon,” Cardoso explained.
“As for Themba, his recovery is progressing well. It won’t be done in a week, but we also don’t expect it to take too long. He’s an important player, and we need to make sure he returns in the best possible condition.”
Rayners Cleared After Cardiac Scare
Cardoso also addressed growing concern surrounding Iqraam Rayners, who was recently withdrawn from the national team setup due to heart-related fears.
“There’s no issue with Iqraam’s cardiac condition that could end his career,” assured Cardoso. “It was a minor situation, thank God. He’s back in training after two weeks and should soon be available for selection.”
Mamelodi Sundowns March On
With Mvala sidelined long term, Zwane still in recovery, and Rayners gradually returning, Mamelodi Sundowns will need to manage their squad carefully as they continue their pursuit of continental glory. Despite these setbacks, Cardoso remains confident that his side has the depth and spirit to maintain their dominance and advance comfortably into the next phase of the CAF Champions League.
