A shocking tragedy has struck the Limpopo province after a SANDF soldier shot his teenage son and then attempted to take his own life. The incident has reignited concerns over domestic violence and mental health within military families in South Africa.

Tragedy Unfolds in Ha Mutsha Village

The 53‑year‑old SANDF soldier allegedly shot his 17‑year‑old son at their home in Ha Mutsha village, near Levubu in the Vhembe District, on Sunday, 19 October 2025.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 6:17 AM. Upon arrival, officers discovered the father lying outside in a pool of blood with a 9 mm pistol beside him. Inside the house, they found his teenage son dead on the bed, with fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

Father Under Police Guard After Attempted Suicide

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the suspect, an active South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member based near Mookgophong, survived the self‑inflicted gunshot wound. He remains under police guard in hospital while receiving treatment.

“The police quickly went to the scene and on arrival they found a male lying on the ground in a pool of blood who was still alive. Next to him there was a handgun,” said Colonel Ledwaba in a statement .

Police recovered several spent cartridges at the scene. A case of murder and attempted suicide has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.

Motive Under Investigation

The motive behind the shooting is still unclear, though investigators are considering domestic violence as a likely factor. According to authorities, the father and son lived in the same home, and there were no previous reports of conflict before the tragedy.

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and urged families to seek professional assistance when facing personal or emotional challenges.

“Families experiencing domestic challenges must seek help instead of resorting to violence,” she said.

Hadebe further expressed deep concern over the rise in domestic‑related crimes across Limpopo, describing the shooting as “a painful reminder of the consequences of unresolved family tensions.”

Domestic Violence on the Rise in Limpopo

Police data from the South African Police Service (SAPS) reveals a troubling increase in domestic‑violence‑related homicides in Limpopo during 2025. The province has recorded multiple cases of family‑on‑family violence, often involving licensed firearms.

The Department of Social Development has also noted that stress, economic hardship, and post‑traumatic symptoms among security personnel can contribute to family breakdowns.

For confidential help, citizens are encouraged to contact the Gender‑Based Violence Command Centre at 0800 428 428, or use the USSD helpline *120*7867# for immediate assistance.

SANDF Yet to Release Official Statement

While the SANDF has confirmed that the man is a serving member, the defence force has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident. However, SANDF insiders have reiterated that all members have access to psychological support services and trauma counselling through internal wellness programmes.

Similar Incidents Highlight a National Concern

This is not an isolated tragedy. Earlier this year, in Bainsvlei, Free State, a 56‑year‑old father allegedly shot his son following a domestic dispute. The victim later died in hospital, and the father was arrested and charged with murder.

Such incidents highlight the need for comprehensive family‑support programmes, including emotional counselling and firearm‑safety education within households.

Call for Healing and Awareness

The SANDF soldier shoots teenage son case has sparked national conversations about family safety, responsible firearm use, and the emotional toll of unresolved domestic conflict.

Community leaders and psychologists are urging South Africans to prioritise communication and early intervention in family disputes.

As police investigations continue, Limpopo authorities stress that violence is never the answer. Seeking help through professional or community channels remains the most effective path to preventing such tragedies.
