MultiChoice has officially announced a DStv Open Time Weekend, set to take place from 7 to 9 November 2025, as part of its 30th birthday celebrations. This exclusive weekend offers free access to DStv Premium content for all active DStv satellite decoder subscribers in South Africa.

Running from 00:01 on Friday, 7 November to 23:59 on Sunday, 9 November, the weekend promises a jam-packed lineup of top-tier entertainment – all without any extra cost to existing customers.

A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

As part of this milestone campaign, MultiChoice is bringing back familiar faces from its early broadcasting days. Ashley Hayden, Scot Scott, and Doreen Morris – beloved presenters from M-Net’s original Open Time era – will return to the screen, adding a nostalgic charm to the festivities.

“It’s a lovely way to give back to loyal viewers,” said former presenter Doreen Morris. “It opens up Premium stories and experiences that many long-time customers haven’t had access to.”

Scot Scott also shared his excitement about returning. “In those days, we had no autocue. Everything was live, off-script and real. It’s incredible to see how far television has come.”

Free Access to DStv Premium: What You Get

During the DStv Open Time Weekend, active DStv satellite users will receive temporary access to all DStv Premium content. This includes:

  • International blockbusters and series
  • Popular local dramas and reality shows
  • Live sport including rugby, football, and cricket
  • Documentary, lifestyle, and kids’ channels
  • BoxOffice movie access

Importantly, this offer applies only to customers with active decoders and does not extend to streaming-only users.

Extra Perks for Premium Subscribers

While the Open Time Weekend targets all active decoder users, current DStv Premium subscribers are in for even more treats. As part of the 30-year celebration, they will receive:

  • Two additional all-device streams (totaling four) from November to end December
  • A dedicated Premium Concierge Service for personalised support
  • Enhanced rewards such as:
    • Free BoxOffice rentals
    • Exclusive event invites and celebrity meet-and-greets
    • VIP access to SA20 and Rugby Championship matches
    • Luxury travel giveaways and set visits to popular DStv productions

This marks a significant upgrade to the Premium offering, with MultiChoice aiming to add more value for its loyal top-tier customers.

A Strategic Move to Reignite the DStv Brand

Byron du Plessis, CEO of SA PayTV at MultiChoice, described the Open Time initiative as more than a celebration – it’s part of a strategic shift.

“DStv has grown up alongside its viewers. We’ve been in people’s homes, weekends, and memories for 30 years,” he said. “Now, we’re making it easier to join or reconnect.”

From 1 November 2025, decoder prices will drop significantly:

  • Standalone HD decoder: R299 on the DStv online store
  • Decoder with installation: R699 online, R899 in retail stores
  • Retail price without installation: R399

This move is aimed at making DStv more accessible and affordable, especially for returning customers or those looking to upgrade.

How to Participate in the Open Time Weekend

To enjoy the DStv Open Time Weekend with free access to DStv Premium, ensure you:

  1. Have an active DStv decoder subscription (satellite customers only)
  2. Reconnect before 7 November if your subscription has lapsed
  3. Sit back and enjoy a weekend full of premium entertainment – for free

No additional sign-ups or upgrades are required. Just stay connected.

Why This Matters for South African Viewers

In a time where streaming services and digital platforms are taking over, DStv’s Open Time Weekend is a powerful reminder of the platform’s legacy and relevance. It offers viewers a risk-free opportunity to explore Premium content, reconnect with local icons, and enjoy the rich storytelling and sport that DStv has always been known for.

For new customers, it’s an enticing invitation. For long-time users, it’s a heartfelt thank-you.

A Weekend Not to Be Missed

Whether you’re a sports fan, movie lover, or someone who enjoys local reality TV, the DStv Open Time Weekend has something for you. With free access to DStv Premium, returning icons, and a line-up of high-value rewards, this 30th-anniversary celebration is one to remember.
