Despite achieving back-to-back Rugby Championship victories for the first time in history, the Springboks have several areas that need attention ahead of their challenging end-of-year tour in the UK and Europe this November.
A narrow 29-27 win over Argentina secured the Boks a second consecutive Rugby Championship title. However, the tournament highlighted vulnerabilities, as South Africa suffered defeats to Australia at Ellis Park and New Zealand at Eden Park. Ultimately, they finished level on points with the All Blacks and only retained the title on points difference a far cry from the dominant form they displayed last year.
Springboks Face Key Challenges Ahead of November Tour
In the 2024 edition, the Springboks won five of six matches, losing only once to Argentina in Santiago del Estero a game they were expected to win finishing eight points ahead of New Zealand.
Coach Rassie Erasmus acknowledged the achievement but stressed that improvements are needed before facing five tough international fixtures this November.
“We are pleased with defending the title, but there’s still a lot of work ahead,” Erasmus said. “Some players haven’t experienced this level of pressure before, and it showed at times. The replacements helped to stabilise the game, but consistency is key.”

1. Consistency Under Pressure
While the team managed to edge close games, lapses in concentration were evident against top-tier opponents. The narrow wins and losses indicate the Boks must maintain composure and decision-making during high-pressure moments, especially in hostile environments like Paris and Dublin.
2. Squad Depth and Rotation
The November tour provides an opportunity to test the depth of the squad. Players on the fringe will need game time to ensure the team is not over-reliant on starters. Balancing rotation without undercooking key matches, particularly against Japan and France, will be crucial.
3. Injury Management
Several key players are expected to return from injury, including wings Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe, and prop Gerhard Steenekamp. However, others like Aphelele Fassi, Jean-Luc du Preez, and Frans Malherbe may not recover in time. Managing injuries and integrating returning players effectively will be critical to maintaining performance levels.
4. Set-Piece Reliability
The Rugby Championship highlighted moments of instability in lineouts and scrums, particularly under pressure from world-class opposition. Strengthening set-piece execution will be vital for controlling possession and territory during high-stakes matches against Ireland and France.

The Springboks’ end-of-year itinerary is a stern test: Japan at Twickenham, France in Paris, Italy in La Nucia, Ireland in Dublin, and Wales in Cardiff. To replicate last year’s success where they won 11 of 13 matches the Boks will need to address these key areas. With strong leadership and strategic rotation, they have the tools to end the international season on a high, but the margin for error will be slim against Europe’s top teams.
