Orlando Pirates forward Evidence Makgopa has received a late call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, stepping in for the injured Iqraam Rayners.
Broos Turns to Familiar Face
Bafana Bafana confirmed on Tuesday that Rayners had withdrawn from camp due to medical reasons, paving the way for Makgopa’s return. The statement read, “Iqraam Rayners has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana camp due to medical reasons. He was called back to his club this morning. Evidence Makgopa has been called up as his replacement.”
Makgopa’s inclusion comes just a day after Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala was drafted in to replace injured Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng. These late changes highlight the selection challenges facing coach Hugo Broos ahead of two vital Group C fixtures that could shape Bafana’s qualification path to the 2026 World Cup.
Orlando Pirates Striker Return to the Fold
Although Makgopa has managed just one goal in 11 appearances for the Buccaneers this season, his contribution extends beyond scoring. With three assists and a reputation for leading the line effectively, Broos sees him as a reliable squad member.
The 25-year-old striker impressed at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year, where Bafana clinched a bronze medal. His standout moment came with a powerful header against Morocco in the last-16 stage—a goal that epitomised his aerial prowess and composure in high-stakes matches.
Makgopa last featured for Bafana during the opening round of World Cup qualifiers in November 2023, starting against Benin and making the bench against Rwanda. His familiarity with Broos’ system and the national team setup could prove valuable as Bafana face two tricky away fixtures.
A Blow for Rayners
For Rayners, the setback comes at an unfortunate time. The in-form forward has been sensational for Mamelodi Sundowns this season, netting nine goals in 12 appearances across all competitions. He was instrumental in Bafana’s 3–1 victory over Zimbabwe in June, finding the back of the net in front of a lively Bloemfontein crowd.
Despite his form, Rayners has struggled for consistent national team minutes, with Broos often preferring Burnley striker Lyle Foster in the starting XI. His absence now opens the door for Makgopa to remind fans and selectors of his capabilities.
Eyes on Zimbabwe and Rwanda
Bafana Bafana will first take on Zimbabwe on Friday before facing Rwanda on Tuesday. Both matches are pivotal in maintaining momentum in Group C, where competition for top spot remains fierce.
Makgopa’s inclusion offers Bafana a physical edge up front, especially in aerial duels and link-up play. With Broos seeking to balance form, fitness, and experience, the Pirates man could once again be called upon to deliver when it matters most.
Makgopa’s comeback signals belief, resilience, and the reminder that in football, opportunities often return to those who’ve earned trust through performance and persistence.
