The Midrand Sector 1 Crime Forum forms part of the broader Midrand Community Police Forum working to tackle local crime trends.
Gas Cylinder Thefts Occur Mostly at Night
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thabiso Angelina Selowa-Kutu confirmed that the thefts typically take place after dark, particularly from 8:00 p.m. onwards. She warned that the trend could spread to other areas if businesses do not take proper precautions.
“We would like to advise companies or firms to improve their security. The petrol garages in Sector 1 and other sectors should also beef up their security to try to curb the scourge,” said Selowa-Kutu.
Calls for Heightened Vigilance
Authorities are urging filling station owners and managers to stay alert, especially during nighttime operations when the risk of theft is higher. Selowa-Kutu emphasized the importance of monitoring suspicious vehicles or individuals seen loitering near garages.
She also appealed to members of the public to assist by reporting any unusual activity in their neighborhoods. “Community members must report any suspicious activities to the sector patrol on WhatsApp at 069 69 70170,” she added.
The police have reiterated that cooperation between business owners, residents, and law enforcement remains key to reducing the ongoing thefts and ensuring the safety of both property and people in the Midrand area.
