South Africa’s national U-20 team, Amajita, achieved a monumental feat on Sunday by securing their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Their 2-1 victory over the USA in their final Group E match not only earned them second place in the group but also marked the team’s first appearance in the Round of 16 since 2009.
Coach Raymond Mdaka lauded his team for their resilience and tactical approach, calling it a performance full of heart and character. This result came despite the odds being stacked against South Africa, with the USA having already won their first two games convincingly.
A Nervy Start, but Amajita Showed Their Character
The match against the USA started with the Americans taking an early lead in the 12th minute through a strike by Noah Cobb. However, Amajita responded almost immediately, with Joshua Wynder scoring an own goal for the USA just five minutes later. The game took another twist just before halftime when Gomolemo Kekana found the back of the net to give South Africa a 2-1 lead.
Mdaka praised his team’s tactical awareness and belief, especially in handling the pressure of facing a high-scoring USA team. “We showed good tactical awareness and played with belief. The boys wanted this result, and they earned it,” said Mdaka. “We must now prepare for the next challenge with the same hunger.”
Holding Firm Under Pressure
The second half saw South Africa weathering a storm from the USA, who were pushing hard for an equaliser. However, Amajita remained disciplined and defended resolutely to secure the win. Mdaka highlighted the importance of managing the game under pressure, especially with the support from home driving the team forward.
“You have to be able to maintain your performance in the second half and manage the game under pressure. And the support we are getting from back home and the performances we’ve put on the field show we are together as a country,” Mdaka added.
