Thabiso Sesane was a cornerstone of Orlando Pirates’ defence last season, but fans have been left wondering when the 25-year-old centre-back will make his long-awaited return.
The talented defender suffered a serious tendon injury in February, cutting short a campaign in which he had been in commanding form. The rupture required surgery, and the club has been cautious with his rehabilitation. Full recovery is expected to take between four and six months, meaning Sesane won’t be rushed back onto the pitch.
Orlando Pirates Provide an Update
Orlando Pirates confirmed, “Thabiso Sesane and Selaelo Rasebotja continue to recover after suffering knocks during the latter half of the previous campaign.” If Sesane’s rehabilitation continues smoothly, he could rejoin training after the upcoming international break and may be eyeing a return to competitive action in October.
Who’s Holding the Fort?
While Sesane’s absence is felt at the back, Pirates’ attacking players have been stepping up. Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa found the net as the Buccaneers secured a comfortable 2-0 win over TS Galaxy. Makgopa opened the scoring with a 20th-minute penalty and now has a goal and three assists in the Betway Premiership this season, highlighting his growing influence. Mabasa sealed the victory deep into stoppage time, ensuring a routine win for the Soweto giants.
Additionally, winger Tshepang Moremi, who has often featured off the bench, earned a deserved league start and played a key role in Pirates’ workmanlike performance.
Orlando Pirates now turn their attention to the Telkom Knockout, where they face Siwelele in the first round on Saturday, 4 October, at 15:00. As Sesane edges closer to full fitness, fans will be keen to see if the defensive mainstay can reclaim his place and help fortify the Buccaneers’ backline.
